James Leland Young left his earthly life on May 19, 2024 at his home in West Valley City he was 92 years old.
He was born August 25, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leland Larmer and Vera Porter Young. He was the second oldest and first son of five children: Doris, Elaine, Robert, and Loretta.
As a young boy, Jimmy enjoyed traveling with his family to Escalante to visit his mother’s family. They would fish at Posey Lake and would explore the forest as his grandfather was a forest ranger at the Jubilee Guard Station in the Dixie National Forest.
Jimmy’s first job was as a paper boy delivering papers to help support the family. He graduated from South High School with high honors.
He married Jean Winslow in Salt Lake City on January 26, 1951. She preceded him in death on February 3, 2012. Together they had three children, daughter Terri, son Craig, and daughter Karen.
In 1952 Jimmy was called to the Korean War serving his country until December 1953. He was assigned to Company C of the 29th Signal Brigade and received the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
His next work venture would last for the next 42 years as an electrician for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1991. He was stationed at the Ogden Depot and then the Salt Lake City Depot. He was always on call and had to go out at any time day or night. He always told Mom not to answer the phone at night but she always did.
During Jimmy and Jean’s marriage, they enjoyed square dancing, where they made many new friends. After Jimmy’s retirement, they traveled to Wellton, Arizona as “Snowbirds” for the winters in their motorhome joining many of their friends. This is where he took up woodworking with his band saw. He made many clocks with precise detail and wall hangings for his family which everyone cherishes.
Survived by his daughter Terri and her husband Robert Eggli, son Craig and his wife Debra Young, and daughter Karen Silver. One brother Robert Young and his wife Patsy, and one sister Loretta Olsen and her husband Glen. Four grandsons and their spouses Shawn and Sara Eggli, Royce Eggli, Cohwen and Amber Eggli, and Jared Eggli. Three granddaughters Angie Hughes, Stephanie Richards, and Kim Luckau, and their spouses and children, and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Jean and his parents, sisters Doris Gagon and her husband Howard, and Elaine Seal.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuaries and Cemeteries, 6500 South Redwood Road, where a viewing will precede the services in the Redwood Mortuary beginning at 1:00 PM
