Janet Bates Anderson

June 26, 1933 — September 8, 2025

Holladay

Janet Bates Anderson passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025 in Holladay, Utah. Janet was born on June 26, 1933 in Payson, Utah. She was the daughter of Louis Austin Bates and Jennie Lois Bates. Janet lived a life of faith, resilience, love, and loyalty.

Janet shared her childhood with her sisters Barbara and Miriam in the small Utah town of Payson with her father the Principal of Payson High and her Mother a stalwart of the local Christian church. Family and the circumstances of growing up during the Great Depression and World War II instilled within her, loyalty to family, country, church, hard work, thrift, and the importance of education. She also fondly remembered swimming in local pools in Payson, playing make believe games with her sisters, reading, singing, and playing the piano of which many of these experiences became lifelong practices and talents which she passed on to her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her education at Payson High, she spent time at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, advanced piano tutoring at Brigham Young University and a BA in Education from Utah State University where she met a handsome young track star named Doug Anderson in a math class.

Janet and Doug were married on December 19, 1955 in Salt Lake City, Utah. This year, 2025, would have marked 70 years of marriage together.

This marriage was rooted in the same ideals that they brought to the marriage of loyalty to family, love of country, and the importance of service to others. Doug (1934-2025) was a Principal at Alta High School as well as a teacher and a coach at Hillcrest High School in Salt Lake City as well as a military man commanding the 19th Special Forces Group, at the same time Janet raised a family and taught elementary school at Ridgecrest Elementary and other Salt Lake Valley schools.

Their success was intertwined in their steadfast support for one another. As a military wife in the 1950's Janet embraced a life of adventure. She traveled to Germany across the Atlantic Ocean on a troop ship in 1958 while pregnant with her son Blaine with their one year old, David in tow. While in Germany they traveled to the surrounding countries, enjoyed friends, and even attended the Worlds Fair.

Upon their return from Europe they lived in Logan, Utah and at 990 Fairclough Drive in Salt Lake City.

The family grew over the years to include:

David (1956) Blaine (1958) Tony (1961) Bryce (1965) and Rebecca (1970). Janet always said she loved having children and joyed in their success.

This large family enjoyed camping in the West Desert of Utah, boating at Lake Powell, skiing in the Wasatch Mountains, and hunting in the mountains west of Grantsville along with little league football, baseball and of course the family business of track and field.

Their home at 7150 Chris Lane purchase in 1965 was an active wonderful place to raise their family. Many families moved into Cottonwood Heights at this time making this an ideal setting for the Anderson Family with friendships that have lasted a lifetime. 60 years in the same home.

Janet, like her mother, played the piano, cooked, baked, and carried on Christmas traditions, every year putting up a train which circled the tree, The tree was covered with hand painted ornaments and lights as well as a miniature village, bringing the Christmas spirit alive much to the delight of her children and grandchildren.

Janet was active in various Christian denominations throughout her life including the local Baptist, Presbyterian, and Southeast Christian Church.

She was a believer in Christ and could be found studying the bible and was a defender of the faith.

She is survived by her Sister, Barbara Rose: Children, Blaine (Michelle) Anderson, Tonny (Jonna) Anderson, Bryce (Nathele) Anderson, Rebecca Lucille, her grandchildren, Danielle, Tanna, Kyle, Stacie, Sterling, Owen, Ashley and Stephanie. Thirteen grandchildren.

She is preceded in Death by her husband Colonel Douglas F. Anderson, her son Colonel David Anderson, her parents Louis and Lois Bates, and her sister Miriam Jene Bates.

Janet's personal impact echo through all of the lives that she influenced in her 91 years on this earth. May her legacy live on in the lives that she touched.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the care of Canyon Hospice and the staff at The Ridge in Holladay for their exceptional care these past 2 years.
