Janet Arlene Samuelson Nelson

March 17, 1941 — October 23, 2022

Janet Arlene Samuelson Nelson passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Sunday, October 23, 2022, in Layton, Utah. Janet was born to Edna Janet Dowdle Samuelson and Wendell Emmanuel Samuelson on March 17, 1941, in Rigby, Idaho. Janet was the second of four children, a beautiful child with a pixie face and sparkling blue eyes to match her St. Patrick’s Day birthday.
Janet met Monte Nicholas Nelson through a mutual friend in Salt Lake City, Utah when she was a Senior at South High School. She waited for him while he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark for two and a half years, and they were married on June 11, 1962. Janet and Monte were the wonderful parents of seven children.
Janet was an expert seamstress and loved to do handiwork. Her children are graced with many beautiful hand-pieced quilts and needle point works of art to remember her by. She was also a talented knitter, with her sweaters being passed from kid to kid, and on to the grandkids. Many people benefited from Janet’s cooking skills which she taught her daughters. Janet grew up in a musical family and was a good pianist. She spent some of her retirement years singing in the Choral Arts Society with Monte.
Janet was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her whole life. She spent her life teaching by example and serving others. She had many callings which she fulfilled faithfully, including a couple’s mission from home with her husband, Monte. Janet spent her days serving others and teaching by example. She found ways to serve, even in her assisted living center. She was a true disciple of Jesus Christ and has left a lasting legacy for her children and grandchildren.
Janet is survived by her children, Lori (Michael) Bolan, Lisa (Dirk) Sandstrom, Linda (Lanny) Johnston, David (Marilee) Nelson, Arlene Nelson, Matthew (Abbie) Nelson and Donna (Marc) Taylor, 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Gary (Edna) Samuelson and sister, Carol (Richard) Hansen, and beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Preceding Janet in death were her husband Monte, her parents, Edna and Wendell Samuelson, and her brother, Rodney Kay Samuelson.
Funeral services for Janet will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in Memorial Lake Hills Chapel located at 10055 South State Street, Sandy, Utah. There will also be a viewing at noon. Internment will be with at the Memorial Lake Hills Cemetery by her husband Monte, and many other family members.
Janet’s family wishes to thank all those who cared for Janet in her final years and days, especially the staff at Legacy Independent Living, Fairfield Assisted Living Village and her wonderful nurses at Inspiration Hospice and Home Health. Special thanks to her daughters Linda and Arlene for their tireless service to Mom these past few years.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
–An Irish Blessing
