Janice Tolman Gygi

July 1, 1932 — July 31, 2014

On July 31, 2014, surrounded by family, Janice Tolman Gygi peacefully returned home to her Heavenly Father.

Janice was born July 1, 1932, the oldest of six daughters of Bion and Lucille Tolman, in Salt Lake City. She attended the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Janice married a handsome young man, Ronald Kay Gygi, on January 16, 1953 in the Salt Lake City Temple. In their 61 years of marriage they had 5 children, their oldest stillborn with 4 currently living. Janice and Ron made several trips to Europe during their marriage with her favorite being the one to Austria.

Children were always a big part of her life as she was a pre-school teacher for 35 years at Holladay Preschool. She rarely went any place without running into someone she had taught in one of her classes or the mother, grandmother or aunt of a former student. She had the opportunity to teach some of her own grandchildren and many nieces and nephews during her tenure.

Music was another of her great loves; she sang and played the guitar for her grandchildren and pre-school children and she was often heard humming through painful days. Janice also sang in numerous ward and stake choirs and performed in numerous plays.

Janice served faithfully in Primary, Sunday School and Relief Society, both as a teacher and a leader. She was an excellent teacher and taught many of us the value of visual aids. She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Janice is survived by her husband Ronald Kay Gygi, her children Kim (Jake) Carlson, Mark (Lori) Gygi, Susan (Tom) Price and Scott (Kristen) Gygi, 8 grandchildren Ashley (Michael), Danielle, Jenny, Sean, Michael, Taylor (Jordan), Jared and Ryan and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Sally (Jay) Wimmer, Linda (Jim) Smith and Kristie (Bob) Pitts and brother-in-law Alfred Van Wagenen. Preceded in death by her parents Bion and Lucille Tolman, her sister Carol Ann (LeBaron) Robinson, LuRee Van Wagenen and baby, Randy.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Winder 6th Ward LDS Chapel at 4366 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City, UT at 11:00 am.
