Jayne Christine Gailey

Our beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend, Jayne Christine Gailey, 74, of Syracuse, Utah, passed away on May 26, 2026, following a brief illness. Born on October 2, 1951, in Ogden to Frank and Gail Gibbons, Jayne was the second of four children. She grew up with a deep love for nature and a dream of being a forest ranger, imagining herself in a yellow Jeep. Instead, she traded that dream for a brown van and the bustling life of a mother to seven children. A trade she made with a heart full of love and a freezer key she wore around her neck to make sure her four boys did not eat them out of house and home.

In her youth, Jayne made friends easily and served in student government, graduating from Davis High School. Jayne married her long time friend, Michael Gailey, in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 16, 1971. Their early marriage took them to Chicago for dental school, where Mike and Jayne built a solid foundation of hardwork, grit, and love, raising their first four children away from extended family while Mike studied. Returning to Utah in 1982, they settled in Syracuse and established the first dental clinic, Syracuse Family Dental. For 34 years, Jayne was the engine behind the clinic, serving as office manager until their joint retirement in 2016.

Jayne and Mike raised their family and built their lives in Syracuse, though her heart often resided at "The Haven," the family cabin at Monte Cristo, where her favorite memories were made among the trees, family and ATVs. Jayne was a woman of remarkable character and hidden talents, the "Annie Oakley" of the family who could famously outshoot her children and grandchildren alike. She was a pillar of her community, serving in many different roles over the years, most recently in the Lion’s Club and Communities that Care. Jayne was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She found great joy serving the women and children within the church, and great peace serving in the Ogden and Syracuse Temples. Jayne taught her family resilience through faith, especially after the loss of her daughter, Buffey, in 2015.

Jayne loved the simple things: a cold Diet Coke, Peanut M&Ms, Charles Bronson, a western movie, and a fresh bag of popcorn. Her greatest gift was with people, to know her was to love her. She radiated a light and love of life that was infectious. Her humor, sarcasm, and sense of adventure put a smile on everyone’s face. Jayne often stressed to her children and grandchildren to think about how their actions affect others and how they would want to be remembered. She truly believed in the good in people and lived by the mottos she often said “be sweet,” “kill them with kindness,” “live on higher ground,” and “turn the other cheek.” She lived by example and was the definition of Christ-like in her interactions and grace.

She is survived by her husband, Michael; her siblings Phil (Linda) Gibbons and Anne (Mike) Dwyer; her children Phyllis (Scott) Moyes, Michael (Jen) Gailey, David (Kristi) Gailey, Matthew (Talisha) Gailey, Clint (Sara) Gailey, and Christine (Ben) Childs; son-in-love Ryan (Allison) Andrew; 30 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and her beloved dogs, Tess and Zip. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Buffey Andrew, and her brother Mike Gibbons. In lieu of flowers, her family invites you to honor her memory by taking time off to be with those you love, preferably with a sweet treat in hand.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses who took such wonderful care of Mom at IHC Layton Parkway Hospital, the Life Flight crew, and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. As we watched them care for her, we witnessed countless acts of kindness, compassion, and Christlike gentleness. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
