It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Goodro of Murray, Utah, on July 28th, 2026, at the age of 79.

Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He lived by a simple philosophy: if something was worth doing, it was worth doing well. He believed in hard work, never cutting corners, and taking pride in a job done right. Those values shaped the way he lived and earned him the respect of everyone who knew him.

Jerry’s commitment to excellence was reflected throughout his distinguished career as an aerospace engineer. He worked as a draftsman for Utah Power and Light in the summers while a student at Olympus High School and at the University of Utah. After earning his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, he began his career with General Dynamics in Southern California, where he worked from 1973 to 1981. In 1981, he moved to Utah and joined Hercules Aerospace, later known as ATK Launch Systems, where he remained until his retirement in 2010. After that he continued to contribute to space exploration through his role as a consultant for NASA, including work on the Orion spacecraft.

Widely respected for his intelligence, technical expertise, and innovative thinking, Jerry was a pioneer in the field of aerospace engineering. His primary expertise was in carbon fiber composite solid rocket motor casings, and his work contributed to some of the nation’s most significant aerospace programs, including NASA’s Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Replacement Program. He also played an important role in national defense projects, including the Peacekeeper missile system, though he was especially proud of the opportunity to apply his talents to programs that advanced space exploration. Colleagues admired Jerry not only for his extraordinary knowledge and engineering ability but also for his unwavering commitment to quality and his conviction that every job should be done right.

Outside of work, Jerry found his greatest happiness in nature and the outdoors. Whether spending time with family or simply enjoying life's everyday moments, he was happiest when pursuing his passions. A gifted fisherman, he was known for his skill on the water and the deep appreciation of nature that it brought him. When winter arrived, he traded the water for the snow, developing an impeccable skiing technique and eagerly passing his love for the sport on to his sons.

In his local community he was known for his active church service where he held volunteer roles of ward financial and membership clerk, youth activity leader, bishopric counsellor, primary teacher, ward mission leader, stake high counsellor, and temple and family history leader. His neighbors admired his extensive gardening and landscaping projects and fondly recall his elaborate Christmas light displays.

He was also passionately devoted to the Boy Scouts of America. He completed the Wood Badge training course and spent many years sharing his love of the outdoors and helping shape the lives of young people through the values of hard work, self-reliance, and respect for others. His steady presence will be deeply missed.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Nichols Goodro; his children, Mark (Suzanne), Matt (Christy), Peter (Caroline), Ben (Jobie), and Michael; and his 16 grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they created with him. He is also survived by his siblings, Bob, Mickie, and Jon, along with many extended family members and friends who were fortunate to know him.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Goodro.

The family is grateful for the love, prayers, and support they have received during this difficult time. Jerry’s life was a testament to dedication, perseverance, and a lifelong commitment to excellence. His legacy will continue through the family, colleagues, and countless individuals whose lives were touched by his work and the example he set.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the River Park Ward, 5200 South Glendon Street, Murray, Utah, with a viewing beginning at 9:30 AM. You may visit with the family Sunday evening from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM at the church. Interment: Memorial Redwood Cemetery, West Jordan, Utah.
