Dorthy Jewell Parks Holmes peacefully passed away October 15, 2010 surrounded by loving family members.
Jewell was born December 11, 1927 in Kingsport, Tennessee to Lester Miles Parks and Regina Montgomery Parks. Jewell's early years were a happy time and created memories that she cherished and shared with her family throughout her life. Jewell and her family moved from Kingsport, Tennessee to Salt Lake City, Utah during Jewell's high school years.
Jewell was introduced to the love of her life, P. Ervin Holmes, by her father who came to know Erv on his visits to the Third Avenue Pharmacy. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple. Jewell worked most of her adult life beside Erv in the operation of their grocery stores, the Nibley Park Market and Erv's Sav-Rite. They personally delivered groceries to the elderly and widowed and gave generously to those in need. Their lives were examples of hard work, integrity and compassionate service. During these same years, Jewell raised her six children and provided countless hours of tender care to grandchildren and others. Jewell was selfless when it came to her own children, always foregoing her needs and interests to provide the best for them. From her early years in Kingsport through the final years of her life, Jewell loved caring for and being surrounded by children.
Jewell had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor. She was an extraordinary cook and often had guests at her table. Jewell always made Christmas a special time for her family, especially family parties. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jewell's legacy is her life of service to those she loved.
Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, P. Ervin Holmes. She is survived by her six children, Jeanie A. Hansen (Vaughn), Lynette R. Dent (Paul), Karen Dittmore (Gary), Ervin R. Holmes (Jennifer), Sheryl L. Holmes and Samuel A. Holmes; her five siblings Bea Christopherson (Rod, deceased), Reva Boren (Lloyd), Caney Parks (Judy), Wanda Gottfredson (Don) and Shannon Parks (Dianne); 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Cottonwood 12th Ward, 1750 Spring Lane (5195 So.), Holladay, Utah, Wednesday, October 20th at 12:00 Noon. Friends and family may visit with Jewell's family prior to the funeral services from 10:00 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Private tributes and messages may be sent to the family at: www.holbrookmortuary.com
