Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Emma Joan Alleman Sumsion passed away August 31, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah. Born January 5, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Joan was the much-adored daughter of John William and Emma Klinkel Alleman. She grew up in Springville, Utah and attended the U of U and BYU, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She married Owen W. Sumsion in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on July 31, 1953. She taught 1st grade in California and Utah until her first child was born.
Joan and Owen were blessed with six children: Cynthia, Sandra (Greg) Francis, Julie (Craig) Poulson, Patricia (Ray) Hicken, Doug (Tammi) and Laurie. She also leaves behind 14 beloved grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Joan was a mother extraordinaire to her family. She first, and foremost, loved her children and grandchildren and delighted in their successes and joys. She was an amazing listener, friend and gifted teacher. Joan was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including in the baptistery in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for many years. She was a gracious and kind woman who left a great legacy of love. Joan walked the paths of this life in a truly Christ-like manner. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings John, Karl, Ramona, Jim and David.
The family wishes to express gratitude to all those who lovingly cared for Joan at the end of her life including those at North Canyon Care Center, Rocky Mountain Hospice and in particular, Raelynn Searle.
