John Lawrence Cameron

April 15, 1936 — November 20, 2023

West Valley City, Utah

John Lawrence Cameron passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023, at the age of 87 with family members by his side.

John “Uncle Larry” was born on April 15, 1936, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Verny Lovette Cameron and Violet Lucille (Purchase) Cameron.

He married his “green-eyed girl”, Erma Donna Baird on May 18, 1955, later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 and served as a B-52 technician at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona until his discharge in 1958. His two oldest sons were born during this time and Mom always talks of their time in Tucson as being very happy and very poor. This is where they learned to grow up.

Dad served as a police officer and Homicide detective with the Salt Lake City police department for 22 years after which he served with Salt Palace security for several more years. He was very accomplished in his profession and proud to have served and protect.

Dad was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various callings and assignments but his best loved was to serve as a worker in the Salt Lake City Temple. He had a great and abiding love and testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ and relied on Him as he endured the many struggles he had during his lifetime. We are assured of the peace and the joy he now has with family and friends on the other side of the veil.

Dad was generous to a fault with his time and resources. He was always on the side of those he called the “underdog”. He touched the lives of numerous people mainly widows and the lonely. He followed the Lord’s admonition to care for the sick and afflicted. He became a police officer for no other reason than to serve others.

Dad is survived by his wife of 68 and a half years and his six children; Greggory “Gregg” Cameron (Becky), Denny Cameron, John “Johnny” Cameron (Ruth), Aaron Cameron (Robin), Kent Cameron (Becca), and his one and only daughter Amber Fiefia and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Vern “Lee” Cameron, and his sisters Mary Cameron and Connie Harrison. He was also preceded in death by his son David Cameron (Chiara)

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 29th at 11:00 AM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary; 6500 South Redwood Road. There will be a viewing for family and friends one hour prior to the service. The interment will be at Memorial Redwood Cemetery.

We as a family wish to extend our great appreciation to all the Staff at Meadow Peak Assisted Living and Elevation Hospice for the care they gave to Dad.

“I will see you soon my Johnny L.”
