John Dilworth Marchant

December 19, 1939 — September 8, 2023

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on September 8, 2023 at the age of 83. Born December 19, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Dilworth Harper Marchant and Grace Estella Calderwood.
Raised in Holladay, Utah. Attended Olympus and Granite High Schools. Although he was a “Jack of all trades,” John quickly became a master carpenter, concrete finisher, and excavator. He worked hard to develop and was the proud owner of John D. Marchant Construction and Concrete. He was a dedicated and extremely hard worker – up before dawn and working late into the evening until his body said, “no more.” He was an honest man in his life dealings and in his relationships and called things as he saw them. He was extremely giving, even to his own detriment at times, and was always willing to do anything that anyone ever asked of him – he never said “no.”
John married his eternal sweetheart, Dorothy Anne Dille, on September 22, 1960 in Holladay, Utah. Later sealed to her in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their marriage was blessed with 5 daughters and one son. His family brought him great joy. John and Dorothy spent the majority of their married life, and raised their family, in Sandy, Utah.
John had a great love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He taught his daughters and many of his grandchildren to fish and he enjoyed the many times his family joined him for a day at the lake. He loved camping and his “get away” cabin and home in Fairview, Utah and purchasing these properties was one of the many ways brought closeness and joy to his family. He had a love for animals and his dogs were considered family. He had a wicked sense of humor and readily shared this with everyone. John loved music of all genres and was a talented musician playing the piano, cello, and guitar. He had a beautiful tenor voice with the gift of perfect pitch.
John had a deep faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and looked forward to a joyful reunion with his son Todd John, grandson Justice John Marchant, parents, and sisters Sylvia West and Kathleen Dahl who proceeded him in death. Survived by spouse, daughters Cheryl (Blake) Jensen, Trisha (Amy) Marchant, Shannon (Terry) Jenson, Kimberlee (Frank) Bice, Kandace (Dominic) Dato, 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the hospice team who attended to John over the last year. We are also deeply grateful to his home care aids, Linette Steiner and Nora Bolda who provided excellent daily care for John while also providing physical relief and peace of mind for our mother and us.
