John Martin Montgomery II, lovingly known as “The Mighty Rider,” passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2026.
John was born on January 2, 1941, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to Clarence and Janie Montgomery. He spent his childhood enjoying countless adventures with his brothers, creating memories that would stay with him throughout his life. Later, he followed his older brother, Clarence Jr.—who was also his lifelong best friend, to Utah, where he made his home for the remainder of his life.
John dedicated more than 40 years of service to Kennecott Copper Mine. He first married Cynthia Salt, and together they had three children before later divorcing.
In 1978, John married the love of his life, Julie. Together they shared 47 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Whether they were camping, riding four-wheelers, or exploring Utah’s backcountry in their RZR with family and friends, John was happiest outdoors. He seemed to know every trail, canyon, and mountain in Utah. He took great pride in caring for the places he loved and was fond of saying, “I always leave them better than I found them.” That’s what a true Mighty Rider does.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Julie Montgomery; his children, Tiffinie Jo Littlefield (David), Sonya Jane Case (Justin), and John Martin Montgomery III (Kimberly); his stepchildren, Leslie Reed (David) and Pamela DeMille (David); 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Jimmy Montgomery (Mary) Rex Montgomery (Shari).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Janie Montgomery; his beloved brother and best friend, Clarence Montgomery Jr.; his grandson, Zachary Shane May; his stepson, Matthew Park DeMille; and his great-granddaughter, Abigail Grace Allred.
John will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love of family, his deep appreciation for the mountains and deserts of Utah, and the friendships he built along every trail. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the beautiful places he loved and protected.
A graveside service will be held at Memorial Holladay Cemetery on Friday, July 17th at 11:00 am. All family and friends are welcome to attend.
