John Dean Spuhler

September 30, 1924 — October 30, 2023

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John Dean Spuhler passed quietly into the waiting arms of a loving Heavenly Father on October 30, 2023. He was 99 years old, lived in his own home, provided for himself and continually sought out ways to serve his neighbors.

He looked forward with great anticipation to a sweet reunion with his eternal companion of 55 years, his beloved son, Rick, and grandson, Brandon.

John was born on September 30, 1924, in Amalga, Utah to John Emil Spuhler and Frieda Kohler Spuhler. He was one of seven children and spent his youth in Providence, Utah. At the age of 17, John, like so many other young men, enlisted in the US Air Force to support the efforts of Allies in WWII. John was a navigator for the Air Force and also served in Nuremberg during the post-war trials. He was proud of the service he provided and was an avid patriot.

After his six years of military service, he moved to the Bay area in California, where he met his beautiful companion, Winnifred Phelps. After a brief courtship, they were married and sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 16, 1948. They remained in California where they raised their two children, Nancy and Rick, in Danville. They were a family devoted to each other. In 1980, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Time and distance could not tarnish the treasured relationships they left behind.

John and Winnie were faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served in multiple stake and ward callings, including two Stake Missions while in California. From 1988-1989 they served a mission to the Washing DC Temple. There they had many wonderful experiences and made many friends.

After Winnie’s passing in 2003, John continued his Temple service and devoted discipleship of Jesus Christ. He provided endowments to over 5,000 individuals on the other side of the veil. He dedicated himself to a life of service to others, often running to the store for a neighbor, shoveling snow for the widows in his neighborhood and spending time with each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was an example of humility and love to all who knew him.

John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Winnifred, his son, John Richard, his grandson, John Brandon, and five of his siblings.

He is survived by his brother, Lynn Spuhler in Arizona, his daughter Nancy (Ron) Roundy, his daughter-in-law Vicki Spuhler (Curt Sydenham).

Grandchildren: Nathan (Brittni) Roundy, Josh (Lena) Roundy, Erin (Josh) George, Jessica (Rod) Wayne, Emily (Dustin) Grange.

Great-grandchildren: Ezra Roundy, Addison George, Cooper George, Rikee George, Olivia Grange, Taytem Wayne, Nora Grange, Leah Roundy, and Petyon Wayne.
