John Quentin Wagner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a true "one of one" gentleman, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026.
Born in Crozet, Virginia, on November 4, 1944, John's character was forged early in life by helping his parents run the local grocery store. It was there where he first learned the principles of integrity, honesty and hard work. His youth also included a three-year stint at military school, where he developed lifelong patriotism.
At 18, he headed out west to attend Brigham Young University. It was a move that would change his life forever. On the pool deck of his apartment, he met Carma Kay Simmons, the love of his life. The two were married and began growing their family while still at BYU.
After graduation, John and Kay moved to her hometown of San Diego to raise their family and launch John’s career.
John was a man of immense integrity and sharp wit. In business and in life, he lived by a simple but powerful philosophy: spend more time listening than speaking, a quality for success, alongside the ability to recognize an opportunity and strike when the timing was right.
His sharp mind and impeccable reputation allowed him to achieve great success, retiring before the age of 50. This early retirement granted him and Kay the opportunity to move to Hawaii, where they built their dream home on the beach.
When Kay fell ill, John became her tender caregiver looking after her with devotion until her passing in 2014. Toward the end of his own life, John found deep comfort in knowing he would soon be reunited with his beloved bride.
John truly understood the art of conversation and what it meant to maintain a friendship. He didn't just meet people; he "collected" friends at every stage of life. Whether he was connecting with folks at the local Starbucks, running a baseball school, navigating business deals, or chatting with neighbors, people were naturally drawn to him. He was a trusted confidant, and wise advisor.
When he wasn't offering advice, John could be found cheering on the BYU Cougars and the San Diego Padres.
John’s life’s focus was to support his family. He was dedicated to helping both his children and grandchildren for success academically, athletically, and financially. He was their greatest champion, constantly bragging about their accomplishments to his friends. They were, without a doubt, the true joy of his life.
John is now reunited with his wife, Kay. His legacy will live on through his children: John (Erika), Brooke Splain (Jason), Nate (Chelsea), and Lezlie White (Tucker). He also leaves his 14 grandchildren.
