He spent the days of his youth playing and working with his family, friends, and neighbors.  During his childhood he became acquainted with the Tippetts family, and developed a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Sunnee Tippetts.
Joe was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from his youth.  He participated in youth activities and was a Boy Scout.  He earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  Joe kept himself busy with work, school, playing the clarinet, playing soccer, and playing as the place kicker on the football team.  He and his brother played on the soccer team that won the Salt Lake City Championship.  He loved wood shop.  He was one of the first boys to attend homemaking class.  He graduated from West High School in 1972.  Go Panthers!  Soon after graduation he was ordained an Elder and served a mission for the Lord in Denmark.
Upon return from serving a mission, the blossoming romance between Sunnee and Joe had fully bloomed, and they were sealed together for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 27, 1974.  They raised four children.
Joe was known for his work ethic, service to others, and supporting his family.  He worked as a carpenter and could build or fix just about anything.  He had the honor to help build several temples.
Joe served in several capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He particularly enjoyed serving as a young men’s leader and scoutmaster.  He also served in a few bishoprics, including as bishop of the 19th Ward in the Salt Lake Stake.  He served on the stake high council and as a high priest group leader.  He also was able to serve as a service missionary in the LDS Hospital Branch with his eternal companion.
Throughout his adult life, he enjoyed activities such as cooking, photography, spending time outdoors, and spending time with his family.  He liked to tell stories and had a great sense of humor.  He loved supporting his grandchildren, and often went to their sporting events, recitals, musicals, and other life events.
