Joy Dan Lewis

Joy Dan Lewis passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on November 4, 2015. He was born in Kamas, Utah on October 14, 1920 to Daniel Denis Lewis and Harriet Vernettie Williams.

At a young age on the family farm he learned the value of hard work and woke each morning at 4:30 a.m., a habit he kept throughout his life. As the oldest son of nine children he was relied on heavily by his parents and given substantial responsibility at an early age. His mother was a school teacher and through her influence he developed a thirst for knowledge becoming a lifelong learner. Throughout his life he enrolled in seminars and classes in a broad range of subjects. Well into his fifties he would take upper level university math classes just for fun. He attended Utah State, Brigham Young University and the University of Utah earning a bachelor and masters degree and completing all of the coursework for a PhD.

Joy married Elizabeth Freeman on January 9, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had four children. He was a very caring and loving father and an amazing role model. He had a strong and positive personal relationship with each of his children and his ten grandchildren. He served his family his entire life and was always willing and available whenever anyone needed help.

In October 1942, Joy entered the U.S. Army. He served during WW II in North Africa and was among the first allied troops in Milan during the fall of Italy. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.

Joy worked throughout his career as a Chemical Engineer, first in the uranium industry and then in the aerospace and computer industries for Sperry, Douglas Aircraft, Univac and Unisys. In addition, he usually had a second job just to keep busy and was involved in accounting/tax services as well as the financial and securities industry. He worked well into his eighties.

He was a lifelong active member of the LDS church and served in many callings and leadership positions in his ward and stake. Never one to preach, he taught his family and others by his example. He was a humble, good natured, optimistic, disciplined man who had complete integrity and honesty.

Joy is survived by his wife, his four children; Sharon (Blaine), Stephen Daniel (Janet), Pamela (Dean) and Susan, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also survived by his brothers Earl and Paul, sisters Fern, Gertrude and Agnes. Preceded in death by his brothers Guy and Glen, sister Beth and son-in-law Mark.

Funeral services will be held at the East Millcreek Ward Chapel, 2702 Evergreen Avenue (3435 S.) on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.  Visitation prior to services from 9:30- 10:30 a.m.  Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
