Kathryn Brown Maughan Pond, 89, passed peacefully on February 2, 2026, having lived a vibrant and full life.
On September 2, 1936, a beautiful daughter was born to LaVern Brown and Archie Walters Maughan in Logan, UT. She was their second daughter; Jeanine being the eldest and later two brothers Archie Jerald, and Herschel Lynn were added to the family. As a girl Kathryn felt so loved and there was no place she would rather be than home with her family where she grew up in the shadows of the beautiful Wellsville, UT mountains. Her family worked together picking beans, thinning beets, and running their small dairy farm. They recreated by sharing Sunday meals, rising early to catch a trout for breakfast at her dad’s special fishing hole in "the bottoms", celebrating Memorial Day, birthdays, Founders Day, and any special occasion with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Music was a hallmark of Archie and LaVern's home and Kathryn grew up singing with her family. In her youth, she learned to accompany playing the piano. She particularly loved singing duets with her dad. He had a gorgeous tenor voice and was well known throughout Cache Valley. She loved harmonizing with him for any special occasion or funeral alike.
Kathryn was very organized and detail oriented. She attended South Cache high school, was a class secretary, participated in FFA, and was one of the 1953 Wellsville Founders Day royalties. She played the clarinet in her high school band. She was loved by many aunts, uncles, and cousins and a tight knit community.
She met Delwin Taggart Pond on a double date and although they were not each other's date that evening, he was so taken by her, he orchestrated a moment the two could be alone and he asked her out. They quickly fell in love and were sealed September 20, 1957, in the Logan Utah Temple celebrating nearly 68 years of marriage.
Together Kathryn and Delwin raised eleven children. Rex (Julie), Kelly (Marcie), Derle (Ginger), Jennifer (Wade) Ashworth, Lynette (Chris) Brown, Ryan (Becca), Philomena (Brad) Parry, Quetzal Chacon (Josefina Barbosa), and Kevin Pond including beloved foster daughters, Lora (Mark) Thurston, and Nhi Thi (Thanh) Nguyen. They also had a special relationship with Michael Anthony who they loved like a son.
She delighted in her 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was happiest when her family was gathered. Her presence made her home a place of comfort and refuge. She planned family vacations, picnics in the canyons, ski days in Park City, Easter egg hunts, white elephant parties, enactments of The Nativity at Christmas, all punctuated with lots of food, and conversation. Her efforts kept her family bonded. She was her grandchildren's modest cheerleader. Never loud, but always present and encouraging; a steady force of twinkle-eyed adoration.
Kathryn had a warmth and welcoming way about her. Gentleness and mildness were her strength. She loved her neighbors and often made her circle brighter by sharing a warm loaf of zucchini bread, a mess of beans, or fresh picked tomatoes from her garden.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, ever grateful for the restoration of the gospel, living prophets, scriptures, and a special reverence for the Savior, Jesus Christ, and His atonement. She always turned to Him through the sorrows and the joys of her life. Sacred music helped her feel connected to God, and she loved serving as choir director for many years. She knew what beautiful music brings to a Sacrament meeting and she appreciated a good tenor section!
In 2000, Kathryn bravely accepted a call to serve a full-time senior mission along with her husband in Phnom Phen Cambodia. In 2005 they served as Public Affairs Missionaries in the Philippines Quezon City Mission, and in 2008 an inner-city mission to a Spanish speaking branch in Salt Lake City. These opportunities stretched her and put her out of her comfort zone, but she absolutely loved the people, went to work doing her best and forged friendships that have endured.
Kathryn had a tender heart full of gratitude. She was without guile and optimistic in her views. She looked for the good and saw the best in others; never speaking ill of anyone. She was a peacemaker and could not be comfortable with contention, greed, or sarcasm. She felt great compassion for others, was generous in offering assistance and always looked for ways to lift and care.
She will be dearly missed by her family. She is preceded in death by her mother, LaVern Brown, her father, Archie Walters Maughan, her sister, Jeanine Maughan Pond, her brother Herschel Lynn Maughan and her eternal companion, Delwin Taggart Pond. She is survived by her dear brother, Archie Jerald Maughan, of West Palm Beach Florida along with her children and many nephews and nieces.
