Kathryn Mawson

February 23, 1936 — June 2, 2026

Kathryn Emily Dunn Mawson, 90 years, passed away peacefully on the second day of June, 2026. Born on the twenty-third of February, 1936, she was the youngest of four children to William Dunn and Stella E. Younger Dunn.

After graduating from South High School, Kathryn married Alvin Lavar Mawson on the third of October, 1954. Together they built their home in Salt Lake City, Utah, raised a family and enjoyed the love of their grandchildren. Kathryn and Alvin spent many years traveling and living throughout the continental United States, including New York, Mississippi, Arizona, and many other locales that Alvin's work as a general contractor took them. Kathryn and Alvin loved to spend their time sailing, camping, fishing, and tailgating University of Utah football games. A beloved daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, Kathryn was known for her wit and genuine sociability. With infectious warmth and kindheartedness, she opened her home to all to share her love of cooking, eating, and savoring fine wines.

Kathryn became an engaged member of many civic and education-focused organizations, including the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, American Business Women's Association (ABWA), Jaycee's, and Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO).

Continuing in her personal commitment to better the lives of those in her community, she served 8 years as a volunteer coordinator at Salt Lake Youth Detention Center. As a 30-year member of Christ United Methodist Church, Kathryn led through belief as a Stephen Minister, as well as the funeral and wedding coordinator for her local parish.

She sang soprano in the church choir for 25 years.

Kathryn will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

Kathryn is survived by daughter Linda Litster and husband Robert, son Ron Mawson, daughter Cindy Baird, son Rick Mawson, and son Jeff Mawson and wife Tina, as well as twenty-two grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents William Dunn and Stella E.

Younger Dunn; siblings Marjorie Smith, Dorothy Freitas, and William "Bill" Dunn; husband Alvin Lavar Mawson; children Mike Mawson and Gary Humiston; as well as one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30am on Sunday, June 28th, 2026at

Christ United Methodist Church, located at 2375 E 3300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84109.

All who knew Kathryn are welcome to attend and celebrate her life that touched so many. In lieu of flowers, Kathryn wished that memorial donations be made to Christ United Methodist Church's Wesley Bell Ringers.
