Kim Quang (劉琼金), beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026 in Salt Lake City, UT.
Known lovingly to her family as Poh Poh, she lived a remarkable life that spanned a century, crossed continents, and touched generations. Born in Cholon, Vietnam, on May 4, 1926, she was the fourth child and eldest daughter in a Chinese family with roots in Canton, China. As a young girl, she went to school in China for several years before returning to Vietnam after the Japanese invasion of China.
In Vietnam, she met her husband, Giai Quang, known to the family as Gong Gong. They were high school classmates whose relationship began with laughter, joking, and doing homework together. Their friendship grew into a lifelong partnership that carried them through marriage, family, hardship, and decades of change.
After years of uncertainty after the fall of Saigon, Poh Poh and Gong Gong escaped Vietnam and came to the United States in 1979, where they were reunited with their children and began a new chapter. Like so many immigrants of her generation, she left behind a world she had known and built a new one through courage, sacrifice, and love. When asked years later about coming to America, what stood out most was not disappointment or hardship, but the joy of being with her family again.
She will be remembered most vividly for the care she gave, especially through food. Though she admitted that as a new wife she did not even know how to boil water, she taught herself to cook with patience and determination. Over time, her kitchen became a place of warmth, abundance, and gathering, and her Friday night family dinners became one of the great expressions of her love.
When asked what advice she wanted to give her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she said to be honest, go to bed early and rise early, be good to people, and be genuine.
Her legacy lives on in the generations she loved, fed, guided, and brought together.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Giai Quang; her parents, Hau Luu and Yuk Lam; and four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her children, Sam Quang (Cathy), Syvia Schrauth (David), and Alice Wong (the late Patrick); her five grandchildren, Bryan Wong (Jocelyn), Derby Quang (Sarah), Aaron Wong (Jade), Anthony Schrauth (Deluca Eubanks), Elisia Schrauth (Francis Brunetti); her six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Thomas, Grayson, Chloe, Naomi, and Leo; her four surviving sisters; and a great many nieces, nephews, and dear friends scattered across the world she lived long enough to see.
Services will be held at Memorial Redwood Mortuary & Cemetery in West Jordan, UT. A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A second viewing will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
The family asks that loved ones honor Poh Poh’s memory by gathering around a table, sharing a meal, and being good to one another.
