Larue Greenland

Dixie LaRue (Anderson) Greenland passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 22, 2023, due to complications from heart failure.
Born February 22, 1932 in Ephraim, Utah, to Leroy and Henrietta Anderson, LaRue was proud of her pioneer heritage. Her ancestors and family contributed to the growth and development of Sanpete County, and of Utah in General. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
LaRue’s childhood was a precious time to her surrounded by beloved siblings and parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She loved dancing and performing for others, often with her cousin and best friend, Norma. In addition to her musical talents, she was very artistic and studied art at Snow High and Snow College in Ephraim. Some of her fondest memories were of the time she spent working at Anderson Drug as a teenager, making sodas under the tutelage of her boss, Cannon.
LaRue’s family always had a garden, along with various farm animals, and her mother taught her the art of cooking, and of canning and preserving vegetables and meat; knowledge that LaRue, in turn, would pass on to her own children. From her mother, she also learned to sew, and to cut and style hair skills at which LaRue excelled. She sewed many of her own clothes, including her wedding dress. And throughout her life, family and friends would call on her for haircuts, perms, and styling. LaRue had an adventurous life growing up in Ephraim, and regularly recounted stories of her youth.
A move to Salt Lake City brought job opportunities at Beneficial Life, and at ZCMI. LaRue’s artistic talents served her well in her capacity as a window dresser for the department store. It was also in Salt Lake City that she met her future husband, Joseph M Greenland, on a blind date. The two courted, fell madly in love, and were blessed with 3 children: Scott Joseph, Brent, and Julie Ann. They instilled in their children the same morals and ethics that they were taught by their families. These included the values of hard work and a job well done, honesty, honoring family, and serving the Lord.
The family moved to Cody, Wyoming in 1967, after Joe was recruited by Husky Oil Company. During this time LaRue was very active in the Relief Society, Sunday School, Primary, and Young Women’s organizations at church. She was also a secretary/aide and librarian at Sunset Elementary School, all of which she accomplished with her usual excellence. In each of these endeavors, her talents and artistry were constantly on display, whether it was painting, creating posters, organizing road shows, playing piano, or singing. LaRue was active in her church choir, as well as in The Barbershop Belles, a local choral group. She truly loved performing. While in Cody, through her work, church, music and more, Mom was blessed with many rich and lasting friendships.
In 1984, Joe and LaRue relocated back to Utah, in Bountiful. They loved the community, and their many friends and neighbors. And, as in their previous homes, there was a garden and fruit trees. The tradition of canning continued for many, many more years. LaRue again found work in the educational system, this time at J.A. Taylor Elementary. Once again, her talents, cheeriness and experience proved very useful, and she quickly became a favorite of the principal, as well as the students there. She also continued her service in her ward and stake. Joe and LaRue were very content to live out their lives in Bountiful, surrounded by family, and many dear friends.
LaRue has been blessed with wonderful caregivers and friends throughout these last few months, and we, as a family, would like to thank them all for their care and concern, including Holly, Megan and all the Aspire staff, as well as Lejla and her wonderful aides at Creekside Senior Living. It was comforting to know that Mom was in such kind and capable hands.
LaRue was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe, her three older brothers, Glenn (Bertha), Clair (Darlene) and Grant (Colleen), and her granddaughter Kelsey. She is survived by her 3 children, Scott (Elaine), Brent, and Julie (Dave) Hall, her sister, Leigh (Bendt) Johnson, her brother Tony (Joyce), 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Everywhere LaRue went she brightened the lives of those around her through her love, cheerfulness and fun personality. She loved much and was loved much in return. She will be dearly missed.
Friends and family may gather for a viewing on Friday, June 30, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Oak Hills LDS Ward, 455 South 1200 East, Bountiful. For those unable to attend, the funeral will be live-streamed. Check back to this page as the link will appear at the time of services.
