1927 Lawrence "Larry" Limberg 2026

Lawrence R. Limberg

January 27, 1927 — June 4, 2026

Murray, Utah

Larry Limberg passed away on June 4, 2026 at the age of 99 after a brief illness.

Lawrence “Larry” Limberg was born January 27, 1927 in Murray, Utah to Elsa Otelia Borg and Axel Rudolph Limberg. Known as “Lawry” in his younger years, he was the fourth of five children: sisters Mae and Joyce, and brothers Ray and younger brother Bobby. Larry grew up near what is now Murray Park and graduated from Murray High School in 1945, a proud “Smelterite.”

Upon graduation, Larry was drafted in WWII, part of “The Greatest Generation.” While he was training in Texas in August 1945, the US ended the war. So Larry was sent to guard German prisoners housed in Boston on their return to Germany. He said it was an easy job because they didn’t want to run away! The war was over!

When he returned to Utah, Larry had the desire to be an artist. He attended Woodbury Commercial Art School in CA, then moved back to Utah and studied at the Art Barn School.

In 1947 Larry married Beverly Campbell (later divorced). They had one child, Mary Kathleen “Kay,” and lived in Holladay. Larry started his own Sign Art Studio in the 1950s and worked doing commercial art for many local businesses. With his distinctive style and lettering, you can always recognize a “Larry Limberg” banner!

Ever the artist, Larry painted in oils then moved to watercolors, his preferred medium. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Mexico, studying other artistic styles and painting his own original works. His watercolors were often found at the State Fair, Murray City buildings, and Wheeler Farm. He generously gave away prints of his artwork to friends and family.

In 1976, Larry married the lovely Diane Cordner. They celebrated 45 years of marriage together. They enjoyed travelling, skiing, going to Mexico, tailgating at UofU football games, and bowling with their “Goofball” friends. They loved cheering for their Utes and Jazz. Larry and Diane lived in downtown Salt Lake, then in 1987 they returned to Murray, buying a home at 329 Saunders- just a few blocks from Larry’s childhood home. Larry lovingly cared for Diane as her mobility decreased until her passing in July 2022.

Always willing to give of his time, Larry joined the Peace Corp in 1969 and went to Sierra Leone.

Later in life, Larry volunteered at three Senior Centers (Holladay, Millcreek and Murray) teaching watercolor classes. Starting in 2008, he volunteered at IMC Hospital, Wheeler Farm, and Murray City. His banners were often found hanging above State Street announcing the summer plays at the amphitheater.

You could not slow “Grandpa” down. A few times a week, Larry could be found going to the gym in the morning then joining his buddies for coffee and a danish. He enjoyed puttering around the yard, fixing things around the house, making banners, painting watercolor scenes, gourds, wooden stools for children, and wooden gardening boxes for neighbors. Everyone cherished his handmade birthday cards.

A recent highlight of his life was flying to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight in May 2023 with other veterans. He loved seeing the WWII memorial, many monuments, and meeting Senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney. There he was presented with his Victory medal as a combat veteran from WWII.

After Diane’s death, Larry was lonely but kept busy going to the Senior Center for coffee and lunch with his buddies. Last June, Larry suffered a minor stroke and had to move into assisted living. It was hard for him to accept that loss of independence, but he enjoyed meeting new people.

Larry had a great sense of humor and was always jovial and in good spirits. His easy-going manner helped him get to 99 years old with patience and ease. Larry rarely complained and took everything in stride. We had a big birthday bash for his 99th birthday in January!

When asked what he was proud of, Larry would say his family: daughter Kay, 5 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. He called his granddaughter, Rebecca “our angel” as she devoted so much time and attention to caring for him and Diane for the last several years. He was also grateful for his stepsons Mark (Laurel) Ross and David (Shauna) Ross, 5 bonus grandchildren and 15 bonus great-grands. Every child’s favorite thing to do when visiting was going out to “the shop” and painting with Grandpa Larry. His love of art lives on in his posterity.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Elsa, siblings Mae, Joyce, Ray, and Bobby, and his wife Diane.

Larry is survived by his daughter Kay (Brian) Vigue of Pleasantville, NJ, grandchildren Rachel (Chris) Hyde of Homer, NY; Rebecca (Jim) Martin of Sandy, UT; Andrew (Heather) Vigue of Tucson, AZ; Tyler (Ali) Vigue of Provo, UT, and Melanie (David) Brough of Absecon, NJ, 23 great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

We love you Grampa Larry!
