On 2 August 2014, Leonard Leroy Rustad was graciously released from this confinement we call life, to rejoin his Father in Heaven. He was born October 14, 1939 to Walter Leonard Rustad and Hazel Sarah Southworth in Salt Lake City, Utah.
While attending Olympus High School, Leonard joined the Civil Air Patrol and reached proficiency status. This enabled him to obtain a fond dream of joining the U.S Air Force following graduation. After basic and technical training in San Antonio, Texas, he served for three years and 10 days on a semi-isolated radar site near the city of Kaiserslautern, Germany, on Moses Mountain.
He later accepted a two and half year mission call from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Denmark, eventually serving as a Zone Leader.
Returning home, he married his-much beloved Edna Larue Grayson, and successfully achieved three degrees at the University of Utah: B.A. Political Science, Master of Business Administration, and B.A. Accounting.
A sensitive musician--piano and organ, Leonard often presented piano programs in Long-Term Care Facilities and Senior Centers. Occasionally his daughter Laura would assist him in these and other various church and social settings. He was the President of the Leif Ericksen Lodge, Sons of Norway for three terms.
Together, Leonard and Edna shared the joy of raising a family of five: Brian George (Jill Bruschke), Mark Leonard, Laura Edna (Stephen Gillett), Phillip Walter (Kerri O'Bryant), and Sally Christine. They were perhaps also a little puffed-up in pride over their gorgeous 13 grandchildren.
Leonard greatly enjoyed his service to the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster, and Unit Commissioner. He was granted the Unit Award of Merit--the highest award available at the Scout District level. He enjoyed two service missions for the LDS church; one as a Resume Specialist at the LDS Employment Resource Center and the other for the Addiction Recovery Program.
As a veteran, Leonard has requested his temporary resting place to be among his comrades interred at Camp Williams.
A celebration of Leonard's life will be held Friday, August 8, 2014 at 10:00am at the Garden Heights South Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South). Friends and family can visit Thursday evening 6:00-8:00pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Friday morning 8:30-9:30am prior to the service.
