Lila Mary Capell Nordgren passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013.
Born on November 11, 1926 in Arimo, Idaho, Lila was the eleventh of twelve children born to Eliza Cordelia and Edward Seth Capell.
Lila attended Hagerman High School in Idaho and then came to Salt Lake City with plans to attend LDS Business College. Because she had only $9 in her pocket, however, she went to work for Auerbach's department store and then for Keith O'Brien's department store (as an elevator operator). It was on the elevator where she met her sweetheart, a handsome sailor on leave: Wesley E. Nordgren, whom she married on December 8, 1945. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1955.
Lila was lovely. She used her many talents to beautify her surroundings and bring joy to all of us. Her delicious food, elegant floral arrangements, impressive paintings and carefully-tended garden graced her home and blessed our lives. Throughout the years, Lila made exquisite quilts, clothing, crochet pieces, and other gifts for her loved ones, which we will always treasure. Lila also shared her kindness as a member of the Alethian Club and a hostess at the Church Office Building.
Together, Lila and Wes raised their children, Janice and Bradley, in Salt Lake City. They later served as ordinance workers in the Salt Lake Temple and as missionaries in Prince Albert, Canada. Lila and Wes delighted in traveling, fishing, golfing, bowling, and spending time with friends and family.
Lila was a quiet example to all of us. We will miss her delicate voice, merry laughter, and tender spirit, but we find comfort in her loving memory and creations she left behind.
Lila is survived by her brother Kenneth Capell and a sister, Lois Capell Hall. She is also survived by her loving husband, Wesley; her two children, Janice Nordgren Gerritsen (John) and Bradley Nordgren (Cathy); eight grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 7, from 6 to 8 pm, at Holbrook Mortuary, (3251 South 2300 East) and on Monday, April 8 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the Olympus 4th Ward chapel (2675 East 4430 South, Salt Lake City), followed by funeral services at 11:00 am.
