Our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother died peacefully at the age of 92 on August 13, 2011.
Joy was born May 4, 1919 to Chris and Tena Thompson, in Tremonton, Utah. She graduated from Bear River High School and after graduation moved to Salt Lake City to attend LDS Business College. While attending school, she got a job at Maxfield Feed and Coal, where she met her future husband, Stan Hale. They were married December 31, 1938, and a month later the marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Stan and Joy raised four children Paul (Kathy), Connie (Harry) Vanderbeek, Karen (Ford) Stevenson and David. Stan passed away August 20, 1980.
Mother married Ferrell Horsley August 28, 1984. They enjoyed 31 months wintering in Mesa, Arizona and Bear Lake in the summer. He passed away April 1, 1987.
Mother married Claude Middleton on August 6, 1994. They enjoyed traveling and also Mesa, Arizona in winter. He passed away August 27, 2010.
Mother was a member of The LDS Church and served in many capacities. As a teacher and President of the Young Women, Relief Society President, on the Stake Relief Society Board and served in the Salt Lake Temple with Stan. Mom and Claude served a mission in Tempe, Arizona.
Mom had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress and shared her talents with others. She loved counted cross-stitching, crocheting and knitting. She made our house a home.
Mom is survived by her son, Paul; daughter, Connie (Harry); son-in-law, Ford; 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren with another one on the way. She was predeceased by her husbands, Stan, Ferrell and Claude; daughter, Karen; son, Dave; parents; sisters, Gladys Ellenson and Grace Homer; daughter-in-law, Kathy Wagstaff; and grandson, John Vanderbeek.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the Little Cottonwood 5th Ward, 6350 Rodeo Lane (1545 East). Viewings will be held Friday, August 19th from 6:00-8:00 at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the LDS Church Humanitarian fund.
