Loraine Hawkins

October 16, 1940 — September 14, 2023

Loraine was born in Blanding, Utah to Laura Elizabeth Brown and Philip Lawrence Hawkins.
She graduated from San Juan High School, May 22, 1959, and in the fall set off to attend Brigham Young University. She attended one semester but had to return home when her father was in a car accident and finances were short.
Loraine moved to Murray, Utah in her early twenties and worked as a bookkeeper for JC Pennys. She passed the civil service exam and became Utah’s first female air traffic controller in 1965. She loved her job at keeping airplanes safe and worked in that profession for twenty-eight years.
At age twenty-five, Loraine dealt with bone cancer in her leg and had to have her leg amputated to save her. She defied the doctor’s grim prediction of a shortened life span to live a long and inspiring life. She worked, traveled, spent time with family and friends, and was a second mom to her friend Gloria’s little boy, Russell.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in Primary, Relief Society and Young Women’s callings. In Young Women she served as an athletic coach and taught the girls her love for baseball and basketball.
Loraine’s great joys were family, friends, flowers, technology, airplanes, her mom’s homemade bread, cars, and cats.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; her five brothers: Ormis, Donny, Philip, Gordon and Edwin, and her sister Loretta.
Funeral services will be held September 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Latter-day Saint Chapel, 1970 Viscounti Drive, Sandy, Utah 84093 (8600 S). Enter off Highland Drive. Viewing will be from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Loraine will be laid to rest in the Blanding City Cemetery, 450 North US 191, Blanding, Utah.

Loraine’s Wish
I have a wish, dear family,
I long for this, dear friends,
don’t grieve at my departure,
but joy in where I’ve gone.
The bright and simple turning
from earth to heaven’s light,
where I will dwell forever
within His tender sight.
So, do not be downhearted,
or speak in saddened tones,
rejoice in God’s great love,
For truly I am home.
Gale Sears, 2023.
