M. Maurene Sargent

M. Maurene Jones-Carlson Sargent, 99, of West Valley City, peacefully passed away on December 20, 2023 surrounded by loved ones.

Maurene was born on September 24, 1924 to George Roy Jones and Mary Maria Chadwick with the assistance of her sister, LaVaughen, in Almo, Cassia, Idaho. Maurene grew up in a dirt roofed log cabin home that was over 100 years old! She spent her childhood working the farm, riding horses, climbing on top of mountains and getting into mischief with her brother, Renaldo. In high school she played the trumpet for the band.

In 1947, Maurene met Glen A. Carlson and quickly fell in love. Maurene and Glen went on to share four kids together, Ron, Bradley, Shauna and Brent. Maurene later went to cosmetology school as her kids grew older. But she didn’t practice much after. The thing she loved most about motherhood was later having grandkids! She found her kids moving away and sons going to war to be the worst parts of motherhood.

Maurene enjoyed spending time with family. She adored her grandkids, great-grandkids and great-great grandkids. She always enjoyed hearing all the things her family was up to. She also enjoyed crochet, reading, cooking and gardening. In her later years she was always ready to go for a drive. It didn’t matter where. She would have her shoes, purse and be in the car well before you could tell her! Maurene was adored by many, all sharing a unique bond.

She is survived by her three children; Ron (Wanda), Shauna (Robert) and Brent. 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Glen A. Carlson (husband), Keith M. Sargent (husband), Bradley Carlson (son) and Janis Carlson (daughter in law).

A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December, 28, 2023 at Jordan Parkway LDS Ward Building, 1510 West Parliment Avenue, West Valley City, Utah 84123.
