Mahlon “Bryan” Johnson, our loving and devoted father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. He was 63 years old.
Bryan was born April 26, 1961 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Thea Jo and Larry Johnson. He attended Highland High School where he excelled on the football and wrestling teams. Bryan became fluent in Cantonese while serving a mission in Hong Kong. In 1982, he married Jodie Anderson and in 1984, welcomed their favorite child, Heather Brooke Johnson, and had a son a few years later. They divorced in 1990. Bryan graduated from the University of Utah in 1988 with a Bachelors in Economics and minored in Mandarin. He then began a wildly engaging and fruitful career at the Utah State Tax Commission where he was adored for his outgoing nature and positive demeanor. Bryan married Sheri Kuykendall on September 30, 2001 on Mt. Evans in Colorado. They shared a black lab, Rico, and a basset hound, Abby, followed by many other rescue dogs.
Bryan loved spending time with his family and frequently volunteered to coach his children’s sports teams. He was an incredible father who was always there for his children. They viewed him not only as their dad, but as their best friend. This love was also extended to his grandson, Liam. Bryan made friends everywhere he went and had the innate ability to make people feel loved for who they were. He was a big foodie and enjoyed restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. Bryan also had a deep love for dogs and actively worked with many rescues. He loved spending time outdoors, traveling, dark humor, and coffee.
Bryan is survived by his wife Sheri; daughter, Heather; son, Jeffrey (Emmalee); grandson, Liam; mother, Thea Jo; father, Larry (Bonnie); brother, Kurt (Carolyn); brother, Steve (Lisa); brother, Rich (Stacey); and sister, Alicia (Rick). He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Dauvin.
