Margaret Brim Boyle, age 96, died peacefully on Sunday April 12, 2026 after a short illness. Beloved family members were at her bedside.
Margaret was born August 4, 1929 in Downey, Idaho. Her parents were Willis and Erma Brim. She shared life on the farm with her older sister Maxine, younger brothers LaVern and Larry and a younger sister, Beulah. She was proud to be a tough Idaho farm girl.
She began wearing eyeglasses at 16 months old. She attended elementary school in Cambridge, Idaho and high school in Downey. Among many other activities, she played the bass drum in the high school band.
She attended Brigham Young University. While there she had a chance introduction to Dick Boyle, who was sufficiently smitten on meeting her that he called to ask her out on a date a few hours later. She graduated from BYU in 1951 with a degree in Elementary Education. Margaret and Dick were married later that summer in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught school at Wasatch Elementary in Provo, Utah while Dick finished his undergraduate degree at BYU.
With graduation approaching and the Korean War in the headlines, Dick chose to attend Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island leading to a commission as an Ensign in the US Navy. This was in keeping with a family tradition of service, Margaret’s brother LaVern serving in the US Army in Korea, and Dick’s older brother Mark having served as a fighter pilot in England during WW2. Margaret taught school in Arimo, Idaho while he was away at OCS and later at sea.
Dick was assigned to the Naval Communications Facility in Yokosuka, Japan. Margaret joined him making the two-week sea voyage from San Francisco to Japan on USNS General Daniel I. Sultan. Margaret and Dick spent 18 months in Japan. They enjoyed their time in an exotic foreign country and the friendships they made with the other service members. Their first child, Richard, was born there.
After the Navy, Dick enrolled in law school at the University of Utah. The family, after Brad was born, now included two little boys. They lived in a married student housing area called Stadium Village on campus.
After graduation, Margaret and family moved to a home in Holladay, Utah. With the births of Dan and Matt, the couple was raising four sons together. Managing four boys could not have been easy for her, but she never let on that it was anything but great.
As her sons grew up, there were the decades of homework, transportation, school meetings, scout camps, church activities and science projects keeping everyone busy. One of her defining characteristics as a mother was her enthusiastic support of almost anything her boys came up with to make or to do. She was a favorite of her sons’ many, many friends and encouraged them to come to the house. They enjoyed her open door and the excellent food she made.
Margaret was a faithful and believing member of the Church her whole life. She always found time to serve in many callings throughout her life, and she cherished the experiences she had serving with so many others. She served as a guide at the Church Museum of History and Art and then at the Conference Center for many years, which she enjoyed. She was a great example of faithful, dedicated, lifelong service. She dearly loved every member of her family.
Margaret and Dick shared a happy life together for 71 years. Dick passed away December 29, 2022. She is survived by her brother Larry H. Brim of Provo, Utah and her four sons Richard and Gayle (Buchanan) of Tucson, Arizona; Brad of Salt Lake City; Dan and Sue (Huff) and Matt and Rachel (Tanner) both of Henderson, Nevada. Twelve quality grandchildren, six boys and six girls and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday May 2, 2026 at the Holladay North Stake Center, 4395 S Albright Dr. (2134 E). Her family looks forward to greeting family and friends in the cultural hall at the conclusion of the service.
