Marie Louise Quist Judd
Marie Louise Quist Judd, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was known for her faith, loyalty, quiet strength, and love for the people and places that shaped her life.
Marie was born on October 3, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Katherine Louise and Ted Vilhelm Quist. She was raised in the Millcreek area and graduated from Olympus High School, where she discovered a natural talent for clerical work—especially typing and shorthand. Marie also began developing her skills as a seamstress, sewing most of her clothes in her teen years.
After high school, she worked for Mountain Bell (AT&T) for five years. Marie married and had two children, Elizabeth and James, before later divorcing. In the months following, she moved back in with her parents. At her father’s suggestion, she took a job working in the office of Boyd Fullmer, where she formed many friendships.
Marie began dating George Judd, the brother of her childhood friend, Joyce. George and Marie’s love story then began. They were married on February 7, 1972, and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they built a quiet steady life in the Cottonwood Heights area, filled with love, hard work, and shared adventures. They remained devoted to each other in life and are now reunited again.
Marie had many gifts. She was an accomplished seamstress, doing alterations for family, friends and Village Cleaners for many years. She also loved ceramics—pouring, firing, and painting pieces by hand. For many years, she gifted her family with hand-painted ceramic ornaments that became holiday treasures. Together with George’s abilities they also refinished several pieces of furniture for their own home as well as some for their children. They often combined their talents of sewing, crafts, and mechanical/electrical skills to create unique gifts for others.
She also loved nature, especially flowers, and found beauty in simplicity. One of her favorite sayings was, “I’m a landscaper’s daughter” showing her love and pride for her parents. She would often point out the beauty, or lack thereof, of different landscaped areas.
Marie was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings and was a woman of quiet but unshakable faith. She also loved to read and faithfully kept a journal throughout her life.
She and George traveled all over the Western United States in their fifth-wheel trailer, making memories in many national parks. They also spent time going on many church history tours with family and friends.
In her final months at Cedarwood Care Center in Sandy, Utah, Marie continued to share what she could such as: offering embroidery and sewing tips to others, sending text messages or calling for holidays and birthdays, even whispering “I love you” to family in her last few days. She enjoyed frequent visits from many close friends including a regular outing with a dear friend to get her hair done and then a visit to McDonalds for her favorite Filet-O-Fish sandwich. She also enjoyed her daily diet Coke in her favorite mug.
Marie was genuine and open. Her openness often made others laugh and sometimes even blush. She loved dogs and animals.
Another favorite phrase she often used was, “Just put one foot in front of the other.” That simple saying captured her outlook on life - steady, enduring, and hopeful.
Marie is survived by her children, Liz (John) Houskeeper and Jim (Jennifer) Judd; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also a stepmother to George’s three sons from his first marriage: Alan (Jeanne), David (Becca), and Jeff (Stephanie) and many step grandchildren and step great grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her eternal companion, George.
A viewing will be held on Friday, July 18 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the LDS church building on 2695 East 7000 South in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11:00 am, at the same location with a viewing beforehand from 10:00 am - 10:45 am. Interment will follow at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery at 3115 East, 7800 South (Bengal Boulevard).
The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Cedarwood Care Center in Sandy and Canyons Hospice for the wonderful care Marie received over the last several months. You made this experience much easier for Marie.
