Mary Elizabeth Bray

Mary Elizabeth (Stowell) Bray, 94, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, in Sandy, Utah, surrounded by love. Born on September 26, 1931, in Medford, MA, Mary was the cherished daughter of Edson and Laura Stowell.

Mary grew up in Medford and graduated from Medford High School before continuing her education at the University of Rhode Island, where she was a proud member of Alpha Xi Delta. She carried the friendships and values she formed there throughout her life. Mary began her career in education with the Attleboro school system, dedicating herself to nurturing and inspiring young minds—work that reflected her steady patience and generous heart.

On July 20, 1957, Mary married the love of her life, Robert Bray. Together they built a life grounded in devotion, laughter, and shared adventure. Whether skiing in the mountains of New Hampshire, sailing the sparkling waters of Narragansett Bay, or spending sunlit days at Briggs Beach, Mary found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She and Robert also shared a love of travel, exploring the world side by side and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Mary treasured time with her friends, especially on the tennis court, where her competitive spirit was matched only by her loyalty to friends. She loved to knit, creating thoughtful handmade gifts that wrapped her family and friends in warmth—both literal and heartfelt. She had a gift for conversation, for hospitality, and for making others feel truly seen and welcome.

Above all, Mary’s greatest pride and deepest love was her family. She is survived by her devoted son, Steven A. Bray and his wife, Kathy F. (Farmer) Bray, of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a loving and proud grandmother to Ryan B. Hurley, Jon F. Hurley, and Michael R. Hurley, and is also remembered by their father, Fred L. Hurley, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert, and her dear daughter, Nancy E. Hurley. Though she carried the sorrow of their loss, her love for them never wavered and remained a steady presence in her life.

Mary will be remembered for her grace, kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, the family she cherished, and the countless quiet acts of love she offered so freely.

Interment will take place at Willow Cemetery, Lynnfield, Massachusetts.
