MaryAnn Hemmert

August 9, 1933 — December 15, 2023

Salt Lake City, Utah -- MaryAnn (Maxwell) Hemmert, 90, of Salt Lake City, died December 15, 2023 after a short hospitalization. MaryAnn was born on August 9, 1933 in Brady, Texas to William Paul Maxwell and Velma Alta Morris. She is preceded in death by her brother, Eddy Maxwell. She is survived by her sisters, Georgia Stieren and Daisy Willard. She had many happy years growing up under the Texas sun. Later, she attended Long View High School and graduated in 1950 2nd highest in her class.

While still in high school, MaryAnn’s artistic talents blossomed. Her chic illustrations and fashion-forward clothing and textile designs were acclaimed in publications such as “The Illustrator,” as early as in 1949.

In 1953 she married Robert Leon Smith. Together they had two sons – Richard and Larry.

In 1965 she married James Hugh Fowler. Their family quickly became a “yours, mine, and ours” as they began their new life together in Okinawa, Japan, where Jim was stationed with the US Air Force. James Jr. was born shortly thereafter; Paula Jane followed a few years later back in Utah.

MaryAnn instilled in her children a sense of independence and responsibility. She was a devoted mother who prepared home-cooked meals – either herself or by phone – nearly every night. She was a gifted paralegal and valued member of her team at Fabian and Clendenin. While there, she helped organize pro bono initiatives, such as legal aid for the elderly. She expertly managed both work and family for nearly forty years.

In 1998 she married Clyde Hemmert. Together they served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the San Francisco area. They were together until Clyde’s death in 2010.

More recently, Mary Ann cherished the love and companionship of her friends at “The Ranch.” Wilma, Laura, Barbara, Berkley, Carolyn, Christine, Candace, Joyce and all her lovely friends and caring staff at Olympus Ranch … but most of all, Linda … you were adored and valued and will be missed by MaryAnn and her family! We appreciate you all so much!

Mary Ann is survived by seven of her children: Richard (Kirsten) Fowler, Larry Fowler, Roxahne Belnap, Eric (Katharine) Fowler, Tamara Aho, James (Kelly) Fowler, and Paula Randall. Her son, Scott Fowler passed away in 1980. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
