Mary Kathryn Pease Hammond

Mary Kathryn Pease Hammond, age 79, died on May 17, 2022 in Murray, Utah. On February 12, 1943, she was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Noman Walter and Gene Harris Pease. On January 7, 1971 she married John Ashton Hammond III.
A very loving and caring wife, Mary was the mother of 5 and grandmother of 6. She was an avid genealogist and enjoyed passing down family traditions to her children and grandchildren. She taught them to always show love and appreciation for her ancestors.
Mary’s passion for the educational benefits for children were legendary. She was among the original members of the Utah State PTA. She was a respected legislator in the Democratic Party for many years, and has been revered as a trusted cohort and friend by many in all state and national political parties. She was a fierce advocate for teachers, students, and the family unit, and she taught this to people in all corners of the state of Utah.
She worked for many nonprofit organizations that assisted families, those with disabilities (including within her own family) and those who were less fortunate.
Her proudest achievement was graduating from the University of Utah with a Bachelors in Political Science, as well as a Masters Degree in Social Work- and at the age of 50 years old. She always said that you’re never too young to learn something new. She was an avid Fan of Utah Football because of her family. She truly loved going to games for over 20 Years, and spending time with her Family
Surviving Mary is her husband, John Ashton Hammond III; brother, Keith (Tracey) Pease of Cibolo, Texas; sister, Helen Smart of South Jordan, Utah; children: James (April) Hammond of West Jordan, Utah, Joseph Hammond of West Jordan, Utah, and Joshua Hammond of West Jordan, Utah; 6 beautiful grandchildren; and son-in-law, Loren Wilson of West Jordan, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Gene Pease; brother, Jed Norman Pease; and daughters, Suzanna Lynne Pease Hammond and Micah Jean Hammond Wilson.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the Westbrook 2nd Ward Chapel, 6500 S. Dixie Drive, West Jordan, Utah. A time of viewing will be held at the church on Wednesday from 12:30 until the time of the service. Interment will follow the service at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
A sincere thank you to Rocky Mountain Care & Hospice in Murray, Utah for the care given our mom in her last chapter in life.
