Mary Loree Shields, beloved mother, grandmother, and community member, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, at age 90. Born on July 19, 1934, in Salt Lake City, UT, she was the youngest of four children of Durwed and Mary Maxine (Lewis) Cook.
A graduate of Granite High School, Loree cherished lifelong friendships formed there. Her warmth and talent as a homemaker shone through her exceptional cooking and hosting, skills she lovingly passed to her children. Her devotion to family and faith defined her life. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served as Primary\president and dedicated time to a service mission at the American Fork Developmental Center.
Loree’s first marriage to William Alfred Jenson brought three children: Dale, Linda, and Mark. She later married David Albert Shields on October 3, 1968, blending their families with his children, Steve, Janene, and Paula. Their union, sealed for eternity on June 27, 1980, welcomed two more daughters, Connie and Karen. The family moved from Salt Lake City to Issaquah, WA, where Loree supported David’s physical therapy practice while creating a nurturing home. After 30 years in Issaquah, they retired to Surprise, AZ, in 2001, enjoying golf course living, before returning to Utah in 2005.
Preceded in death by her husband David, parents, in-laws David and Melva Shields, brothers Durwed “Mike” and Rodney Cook, and grandson Devin Ree Harris, Loree leaves a legacy of love. She is survived by her children Dale (Cheryl) Jenson, Linda Anderson, Mark (Heidi) Jenson, Connie (Paul) Shumway, Karen (Denzil) Harris, stepchildren Steve (Brenda) Shields, Janene Shields, Paula (Randy) Nagle, 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A viewing will be held May 10, 2025, at Memorial Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, from 10:30 to 11:40 am, followed by a graveside service at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Loree requested donations to The Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her compassion and faith continue to inspire all who knew her.
