Maudie Ranck Strode, age 100, was born to Carl Peter Ranck and Keziah Maud Howick on May 12, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the youngest of four brothers and two sisters. Her mother died of influenza on October 20, 1918, when she was 17 months old. Her father married Abbie Stout in 1919, and two more sisters were added to the family, and Abbie became mother to all nine children. Maudie attended Sherman Grade school and Granite High School. In her teens she worked as a baby sitter and a Car Hop. She married Edgar J. Reed in 1938.
Eddie became interested in flying and bought an airplane and learned to fly. Maudie was encouraged to learn also and did, including many solo flights. After Eddie's early death in 1946, she married Roy Strode in 1948. At age 40 she learned to swim and dive, even passing the lifesaving class. She always dressed beautifully and her hair was her special feature. She and Roy lived in California until his death in 2002, when she moved to Salt Lake City where she lived with her sister, Ruby Haskins for about nine years.
