Maurine Stokes Cook

Maurine Stokes Cook, age 97, left this life peacefully on her terms January 31, 2011.

She was born September 29, 1913 in Draper, Utah to Archibald LaGrand Stokes and Mary Lupton Heward. She was the second of 9 children. When she was 3 years old her family moved to Burley, Idaho. When she was 14, the family moved back Salt Lake.

Maurine graduated from Granite High School. She married Clifton Louis Cook on August 17th 1931. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.

She worked at the Small Arms Plant, Auerbach's and the University of Utah Book Store. She was a volunteer at "This is the Place Heritage Park" and enjoyed taking the part of Mary Fielding Smith.

She was a member of the Winder and Valley View 3rd Wards. Maurine loved histories and wrote a book about the Winder Ward history. She also worked on histories for the Holladay North Stake. She held many church callings and two of her favorites were working in the Salt Lake Temple and serving on an LDS mission with her husband.

Clifton and Maurine had 6 children, Louis (Emily), Arvin (Darlene), Maurice (Marjorie), Ruby (Cornelius), Ruth (Keith) and Rebecca (Kelly). We trusted Mom to keep the total on the number of her descendants. We think the number is about 27 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren and 41 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, five of her siblings and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Cottonwood 16th Ward, 6350 South Rodeo Lane (1545 East). Friends and family can visit Friday evening at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Instead of flowers the family would like to suggest contributions to the LDS Church Missionary fund or "This is The Place Heritage Park."
