Monna Lou Riggins McBroom Newey, passed away peacefully on April 5th, surrounded by her loving family, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer four days earlier.
Mona was born in Salt Lake City to Beulah Fern Riggins and Ross Riggins. She was the second of Beulah's four children and graduated from West High School.
Mona was an exceptional stenographer and put her skills to work for International Harvester, where she met and later married Howard Kirtley McBroom, Sr. in 1952 (divorced). They had two children, Howard K. McBroom, Jr. "Kirt" and Lisa McBroom Clark. Mona found her second great love in Harold L. Newey, whom she married in 1972. She later worked as head stenographer for Union Pacific Railroad for over 20 years and as stenographer to the President and CEO of Husky Oil.
Mona lived an incredible and full life every single day. She was simply too busy living life to find time in her schedule for the illness she felt from the cancer. She was blessed with some extraordinary friends who enriched her and made her life happy and complete. She was especially close to Mary Brewer and all their gang (who are too numerous to mention) with whom she enjoyed travelling, attending sewing classes, and playing in several Bridge and Solitaire Clubs. She had a deep love for the theatre, opera, and ballet to which she had season tickets and enjoyed her luncheons with her wonderful friends. Mona was dedicated to her family and she exemplified charity and compassion as she served at home, and at the Assistance League of Salt Lake City. She had an unsurpassed sense of style and fashion to the very end.
Mona was very proud of her grandchildren. She had a special bond with Ricky that only they shared, and she loved dearly and was constantly amazed by Jascha (Candice). She had the most incredible sense of humor with her grandsons and could hold her own when bantering with them, always without missing a beat.
Her legacy will continue through her sister, Susan Heckman (Bob); daughter, Lisa Clark; two grandchildren, Ricky Clark and Jascha Clark, and beloved granddaughter-in-law Candice Mannion Clark. She is also survived be her ex son-in-law, Rick Clark, whom she always respected and inquired after, and many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Lou Henriksen, her namesake; grandfather, William Henriksen; father, Ross Riggins; mother, Beulah Selander; stepfather, Willard Selander; son, Kirt McBroom; sister, Joan Bohmke; and brother, Gary Selander.
