Our mom, Nancy Cowley, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 30, 2026. She suffered from Parkinson’s disease for many years. She was born on July 2, 1935, in Shelley, Idaho, to Samuel Lawrence Dial and Elga Thorne. Her family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1941. Nancy graduated from Cyprus High School.
Nancy married the love of her life, Dale Cowley, on June 4, 1954, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 62 years and had six children.
She went to cosmetology school and opened a hair salon in her home in Sandy, Utah. She worked at Industrial Supply as an account manager until she retired.
Nancy was an active member of the LDS church, serving in many callings, including Primary and choir director. She also loved her family, grandchildren, and her brothers and sisters. They were a priority in her life.
After her retirement, Dale and Nancy moved to Murray, Utah. They spent the summer in Murray and spent their winters in Yuma, Arizona. She loved spending time with her sisters Donna, Beverly and Darlene, along with other family members, in Yuma at their trailer.
Nancy was an amazing quilter. Her family loved receiving quilts for special occasions. Much love was put into each quilt. She loved doing crafts, especially ceramics and sequin embroidery. Many people have enjoyed her Christmas tree skirts and wall hangings.
She loved going to their cabin in Tabiona and spending time with her family. The annual deer hunts were a family tradition. Nancy enjoyed playing Pinochle and other card games with her siblings. She also enjoyed camping with her children when they were a young family. She enjoyed all the family reunions on both the Dial and Thorne sides. Nancy loved her dog and had several during her lifetime.
Nancy was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching her boys play football and other sports while growing up. She loved watching football, basketball, and golf, especially BYU and the Utah Jazz.
Nancy is survived by her loving sons, Bill (Shar), Kim (Michelle), Jay (Vickie), and Bret Cowley, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Janice Dial. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, two daughters, Terrie and Sandy, one daughter-in-law Suzie, one great-granddaughter Peyton, and nine siblings: brothers Leon, Grant, Dennis, Bob, Hal and sisters Donna, Norma, Beverly and Darlene.
The family would like to express our thanks and gratitude to her hospice team: Tara, Diana, Ben, Eliza, Sheila, and Jody, as well as family and friends who helped care for Nancy during the last 6 months.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Nancy’s name to Parkinson’s Research or another charity of your choice.
