With deep sadness, we bid farewell to our father and grandfather, Oloa Alesana Sa. Born August 21, 1939 to Fuarosa Manuo and Samoa Fa’atili in Lufilufi, Western Samoa. He returned peacefully to his heavenly father on June 21, 2025 at 7:09pm, next to his eternal companion and sweetheart, Ioana.
Dad spent his childhood deeply immersed in the Samoan culture, learning its values, language, and traditions through the guidance of his beloved mother. Later in life, he honored his heritage by accepting the High Talking Chief title for his family, a role he embraced with pride and humility.
He was a gifted practitioner of fofo-the traditional Samoan healing massage- and selflessly used his hands and heart to help countless families. He often said he was simply a vessel for God, allowing divine healing to flow through him in service to others.
1965, at his best friend’s wedding, Dad met the woman who would become his eternal companion and sweetheart: Ioana Laina Tupou. He often recalled the moment he first saw her serving at the reception. Determined and smitten, he made several attempts to win her heart. With patience, persistence, and even a deal with her parents, he eventually won her love. From that moment on, Dad devoted himself completely to Mom, caring for her in every way possible and building a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
He was the epitome of hard work, dedication, intelligence, and above all-care. Dad lived with intention and purpose, pouring his heart into everything he did. Whether working with his hands, leading his family, or serving others, he did it with quiet strength and deep compassion.
He had a remarkable gift: the ability to make every person he encountered feel seen, valued, and important. His presence was steady, his words sincere. In times of conflict, Dad leaned into peace, always striving to understand and uplift-yet he remained unwavering in his faith and convictions. His strength was not loud, but it was unshakable.
Dad was a devout and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, faithfully serving in many roles throughout his life. His callings ranged from translating books, videos, and talks, to serving in the Bishopric, High Council, Elders Quorum, and as a High Priest-just to name a few. His deep commitment to the gospel was evident in all he did, and he was often called upon to speak at church events due to his spiritual insight and heartfelt delivery.
His faith deepened even more while serving in the temple, a sacred place where he found peace and purpose. Of all his callings, his favorite was teaching the youth. He had a special place in his heart for those often labeled as “troubled,” and would lovingly say, “They merely want to be heard-you just have to listen a little closer.” His ability to see people for who they truly were and meet them with empathy and understanding left a lasting impact on everyone he taught.
Dad leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and unwavering service. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ioana, his 5 children; Zita (Peni) Bernard, Polita (Karama) Leota, Laina (Jeff) Olive, Nu’utupu Sa, Rosabelle Sa, 23 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, all of whom carry pieces of his spirit and strength within them. His life was a living testimony of compassion, humility, and dedication-not only to his family and faith, but to every person whose life he touched.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that his journey continues beyond this life. His wisdom, laughter, and quiet strength will echo in our memories forever. We will carry his lessons with us, listen a little closer, love a little deeper, and strive to honor the remarkable man he was.
