Peter Stam

September 10, 1931 — September 16, 2022

Peter Christiaan Stam, age 91, died on September 16, 2022 in Sandy, Utah.
He was born on September 10, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lena Kranendonk and Pieter Christiaan Stam. He was the third child and only son born to first generation Dutch immigrants. His father died when he was 7 years old and Pete learned to work hard from an early age.
As a teenager, he worked at the Spud Nut shop where he first met Bonnie June Larson. Pete was quite taken with Bonnie and offered her a job right on the spot. They dated, fell in love, and were married on August 30, 1950. Bonnie was the love of his life.
Pete and Bonnie raised 5 children: Shauna, Chris, Sherrie, Clint and Adrienne. They taught their children to cherish family, to serve others, and to enjoy the outdoors. They spent many summers in Flaming Gorge, camping, fishing and going on hunting trips.
Pete was a creative person. He dabbled in oil painting, but most of his creative talent was spent woodworking, and building homes. As a general contractor of 40 years, Pete built hundreds of homes throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
Pete was a hard worker and could fix or build almost anything. He used his talents in serving others and often performed “secret” service projects for people without recognition.
Pete and Bonnie served for 7 years as hosts in the LDS Conference Center. They loved this calling and met many dear friends through their service. They later served as missionary housing inspectors and as temple workers in the Jordan River Temple.
Pete was an avid reader and kept lists of the dozens of books he read. He and Bonnie would spend hours during the summer on their covered patio reading and visiting with friends and neighbors. We will miss visiting and asking him how he’s doing and hearing his customary reply, “ ‘Purt near perfect!”
His drink of choice was Diet Coke, you’d never catch him without one. He didn’t care much for salad though; “Do you think I’m a rabbit?” He would ask if offered.
Pete adored his wife, Bonnie. After her death 3 years ago, he’d often talk about how much he missed her, his “pretty little wife” who was waiting for him on the other side. Although he will be missed by all of us, we celebrate his joyful reunion with his “pretty little wife” up in Heaven.
Pete is survived by his children Shauna (Mike) Stoker, Christiaan Stam, Clinton (Ranee) Stam, and Adrienne Thompson, 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie June Larson, daughter Sherrie Ann Stam, parents Lena Kranendonk Stam Barney and Pieter Christiaan Stam, siblings Gertrude Beard, Agnes Freebairn, and Lavon Weidner, Son-in-law Michael Stoker, and grandson Brett Stam.
