Phillip Groves Quigley

Phillip Quigley, 80, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 1, 2025, after a long struggle with leukemia and kidney disease. He was born on December 21, 1944, in Seattle, Washington, to Robert Groves Quigley and Helene Hoag Quigley. He married Lorraine Ann Clay on June 13, 1969, in Bountiful, Utah.

Phil grew up in Garden Grove, California and graduated from Rancho Alamitos High School in 1962. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in 1967 and later attended the University of Utah School of Law. Though health challenges interrupted his studies in law, Phil’s dedication to learning never waned. He went on to earn a Master of Education degree, specializing in Educational Psychology, from the University of Utah in 1985.

Phil devoted his professional life to helping others. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, he worked with compassion and integrity across several organizations, including the Utah Alcoholism Foundation’s Addiction Treatment Center where he served as Director, St. Benedict’s ACT Center, Magellan Behavioral Health, and Aetna Behavioral Health. He completed specialized training in Disaster Mental Health Services with the American Red Cross in preparation for serving participants during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Phil retired on January 1, 2009, after a long and meaningful career in service to others.

After retirement, Phil continued to give generously of his time and talents. He served on numerous committees and on the Board of Trustees at the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society, where his thoughtful presence and steady guidance were deeply valued.

Phil was a man of wide-ranging curiosity and creativity. He loved Shakespeare and poetry and would recite long sections from memory. Phil had a sharp wit and enjoyed word play, puns, and keeping people on their toes. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting fountain pens, practicing calligraphy, and exploring the world of computers and technology. A lifelong learner, he nurtured interests in philosophy, physics, and politics, always eager to understand more about the world around him.

To his granddaughters, he was lovingly known as “Hoo-Hoo,” a name that originated from a children’s book that he read to them frequently from the time they were infants. The nickname became a treasured part of family life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helene Quigley; his sister, Dolly Clarice Quigley; and his beloved daughter, Michelle Quigley. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine; his son, Mark, daughter-in-law Amy, granddaughters Alexandria and Elizabeth; and his brother, Lawrence Quigley.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at the Aspen Ridge Transitional Rehab Centers, both West and East, to the Huntsman Cancer Institute doctors, and to the nurses, therapists, and aides from Huntsman@Home for providing excellent care, compassion, and support. You made Phil feel safe and respected until the very end. Thank you for everything you do. Your work is so important to families like ours.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 20th, at 2:00 p.m. at the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society, 6876 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. Interment will follow in a private family ceremony at Mountain View Memorial Estates in Cottonwood Heights.

Phil’s memory will live on in the countless lives he touched, the compassion he offered, and the love he shared with his family and community.
