In Loving Memory of Piuela Pole’o Tokoma’ata Vailea
June 25, 1947 – June 11, 2025 (77yrs)
With deep sadness and tender hearts, we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and aunty, Piuela Pole’o Tokoma’ata Vailea, who returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.
Piuela was born on June 25, 1947, in Vaini, Tongatapu, Tonga, the youngest of nine children to Sioeli Pole’o Tokoma’ata of Vaini and Mele Na’ati Kuliniua of Nakolo. She was a bright, determined, and faithful woman who devoted her life to service, education, and family.
On July 13, 1967, she married her eternal companion, Sione ‘Asulusi Vailea of ‘Uiha, Ha’apai. Their marriage was later solemnized in the New Zealand Temple on February 28, 1974, along with their two beloved daughters, Sisilia Taliauli and Mo’unga’one Pututau. Their love and partnership stood as a pillar of strength for their family and community. Though their earthly journey together ended just six weeks apart—Sione preceded her in death on April 30, 2025—their spirits are surely reunited in peace.
Piuela was a natural scholar. After passing Tonga’s government entrance exam in the sixth grade, she pursued her education despite financial hardship, attending Queen Salote College instead of Tonga High School, Fullerton High School in Fiji, and later Bulah High School in Vaini. In 1982, she and her husband graduated together from Brigham Young University–Hawaii Campus with Bachelor of Science degrees—a remarkable shared milestone that reflected their lifelong commitment to education and faith.
Together, they served as educators at Liahona High School and Nauvoo Middle School, inspiring generations of students. Before retiring, Piuela served as the Director of Food Services at Liahona High School, where she was known for her leadership, compassion, and dedication.
After retirement, Piuela and Sione immigrated to Utah to be near their daughters and grandchildren, where they built a new home full of love, laughter, and the gospel. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Piuela held many callings, including Relief Society President at both the ward and stake levels, and taught in Sunday School and Primary. She was beloved for her testimony, joyful spirit, and the wisdom she shared in every lesson.
Piuela found her greatest joy in her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. She was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and the light she brought to any room. Her presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Sisilia Vailea Talia’uli (Toni-RIP), Mo’unga Vailea Pututau (Pupunga Mataliki), Fe’ofa’aki-RIP (Lavinia) Mele Pole’o Vea (Tevita), Haunani Tuita (Petueli), ‘Ana Vehekite Talanoa (Sione), Sioeli Pole’o Vailea (Penina), Sonatane Pole’o Vailea, Loisi Pole’o Vailea Niutupuivaha (Feke)
She also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy of faith, strength, and love.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah.
