Roy Douglas Sprague, Jr. passed away peacefully July 8, 2015 at University of Utah Medical Center after a 6 year battle with Multiple System Atrophy. He was born Sept. 10, 1940 in Peoria, OK. His family later moved to San Antonio, TX where he graduated from Jefferson High School. He attended Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University before enlisting in the Navy where he served during the Cold War as a Fire Control Technician-Missile. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he resumed his studies at Texas A&I University earning his degree in 1968 in General Engineering. He immediately went to work as a Petroleum Engineer for Texaco and later took a job with Tenneco Oil. While working for Tenneco, he was transferred to Bakersfield, CA where he met and married his wife, Carolyn. They spent several years there before his transfer to Houston TX, where they lived for more than 20 years. They moved to Denver in 2006 and after his retirement in 2011, settled in Salt Lake City.
Doug enjoyed skiing, but he was an avid golfer. Doug and Carolyn traveled extensively, most of the trips involved a group of friends from Texas and most involved golf. He was proud to say he played many of the courses that the professionals played. Doug passed the first qualification round for the US Senior Open in 2004 and was invited back to qualify in 2005.
Doug was preceded in his death by his parents, Roy D. and Fannie M. Sprague, his sister Patricia Sue DeWitt, and his niece Rebecca Jane Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Louise Cockayne Sprague of Salt Lake City, step-son, Courtney Kent Stacey of Webster, TX, step-daughter, SyriAnne Louise Riches (Brett) of Conyers, GA, nephew Trey Johnson (Elise), nieces Elizabeth DeWitt and Sharon Kay Cochran (Chris), grandchildren, Dustin Kent Stacey (Alissa), Devin Courtney Stacey (Melonie), Samantha Louise Blair, and his great-grandchildren, Jason Cameron Blair, Riley Douglas Stacey, and Amelia Kay Stacey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 11:00am at the Garden Heights South Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South), where friends and family can visit 9:30-10:30am prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park.
