Reid G. Oliver, age 85, passed away June 27, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was married over 65 years to his high school sweetheart, Julene Bowen. They raised their 3 children in the Cottonwood area of Salt Lake City. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gervell Francis Oliver and Beulah Esther Smith, and his sister Dorothy Johnson (Gary)
One of his fondest childhood memories is running sheep with his uncle Gus Kiahtipes in what is now Vail, Colorado. He grew up in Price and attended Carbon High School. He enjoyed math and sports, he was offered a football scholarship to Snow College but he chose to attend the University of Utah on a scholarship from Sperry Univac graduating in electronic engineering. He enjoyed problem solving and creating innovative designs for many clients. He was proud of his diverse projects including sonar for ocean mapping, the Sunfish sailboat, aerospace, military, farming and mining equipment and factories, jetways, medical equipment and the Taffytown salt water taffy machine. His influence in engineering was worldwide
Reid’s primary focus was his family. His leisure time was spent camping and boating at Lake Powell. He loved pulling innumerable friends and family around the lakes of Utah. He enjoyed snow skiing, bowling, hunting and golfing. He was a diehard University of Utah fan and loved to cheer at the football games. He had season tickets to the Hale Theatre. He and Julene played bridge every month with their lifelong friends.
His favorite calling was serving the young men. He served in the Alma Branch at the Detention Center and at Decker Lake. He and Julene were service missionaries at the Joseph Smith Building for 13 years.
Reid loved to travel and had many opportunities to see the world both for work and for pleasure. He instilled a love of food and cultures in his children.
He is survived by his wife, Julene,3 children, Rick (Liisa), Janelle Ozawa (Keith), Shawna O’Grady (Charles), 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and his brother Doug (Dagmar) Oliver.
Services will be at Memorial Holladay Mortuary on July 2, 2024 with viewing from 11:00am-12:45pm, with service 1:00pm and internment 2:30pm at Memorial Holladay Cemetery.
The Oliver Family would like to express our gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at St. Mark's Hospital and Monument Care Center. We are also appreciative of all the love and support of friends and ward members.
