Richard “Dick” Martin Benton, 71, our beloved husband, father, and “Pa”, passed away peacefully at home in Salt Lake City on June 17, 2026, due to Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born on March 25, 1955 in Salt Lake City to Marilyn and Paul Benton, on his mother’s 23rd birthday.
He was a scrappy and beautiful little boy who loved outdoor adventures. His teen years were spent riding motorcycles, fixing up cars, skiing in the winter, and golfing in the summer.
He graduated from Highland High School and later from the University of Utah.
He and his wife, Jil, had their first date on June 6,1975, and they’ve been together ever since. They were married on July 15, 1977, in the Salt Lake Temple. Richard frequently said that she was the best thing that ever happened to him, and she said the same thing about him. They raised their family in Cottonwood Heights, where there was a lot of love, laughter, early bed times, and dance parties. He never missed a recital, game, or performance of any kind. Family was everything to him.
Being a Grandpa wasn’t something he did - it was who he was. His grandchildren were his greatest joy, and he loved them with his whole heart.
Richard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He showed his devotion to the gospel through constant, quiet service and by accepting others just as they came. His Christlike example and steadfastness were the rock of his family.
He worked hard, played hard, and loved hard. He will be deeply and constantly missed.
He is survived by the love of his life, Jil Taylor Benton; his three children; Suzanne (Ted) Hatch, Elizabeth (Bryce) Catten, and John (Melanie) Benton; his seven perfect (according to him) grandchildren; Benton, Reed and Emme Hatch; Rowan and Ruby Catten; and Wilson and Jack Benton; his siblings, Steve (Ann) Benton, Jane (Grant) Jones, and Lyn (Constantine) Martin; and many adoring nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family graveside service. Please join us for an open house celebrating Richard’s life on July 1, 2026, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Twenty & Creek (2050 E Creek Rd).
In lieu of flowers, go out and get an ice cream with your family.
