Robert Gillis

Robert Gillis passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 28, 2015. He was born in Weldona, Colorado on May 3, 1924 to Ada Gardner McKinlay and Charles Ogal Gillis. He married Gisele Elsie Stange on August 10, 1948 in the Logan, Utah Temple.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Elsie moved into the Rosecrest Ward area in East Millcreek in October of 1948 where they reared their 5 children and still resides to this day. Bob  served in several church callings. His true love was scouting, where he served as Scout Master and other scout leadership positions for over 30 years.
He was employed by Garrett Freight Lines for 38 years and H & R Block for 15 years. After his retirement, he and Elsie served on 4 full time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1 service mission at Welfare Square and served in the Salt Lake Temple for 10 years. Bob loved the outdoors, he was an avid camper, hunter, fisherman and loved snowmobiling, boating and waterskiing. He had a great love and devotion to Elsie and his family. He enjoyed taking them on vacations around the country and to the family cabin in the Uinta's, which he built.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He is a great example to all who knew him and defined the term, "Enduring to the end".

Robert is survived by his wife, Elsie; children, Robyn (Larry) Anderson, Kim (Annette) Gillis, Jody (Dan) Ahlstrom, Terrell (Becky) Gillis, Tracy (Jill) Gillis; 26 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Ada & Charles Gillis; brothers, Clarence and Howard Gillis; sister, Alice Young; nieces, Karen Young and Nancy Nelson; nephews, Buzzy Gillis and Dewayne Young; and granddaughter, Giselle Fleming.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 10, 2015 at 11:00am at the Rosecrest 1st Ward, 3101 South 2300 East. Friends and family are invited to visit Sunday evening, August 9, 6:00-8:00pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Monday morning 9:30-10:30am prior to the service.
