Holladay-Sandy

Holladay – Sandy, Utah. Robert William Timmerman, Sr., 1st child of William Peter Timmerman and Mary Elvira Littlefield, a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather friend and neighbor, passed away April 25, 2025 to the waiting arms of his Heavenly Father and sweetheart Verla, after suffering a traumatic brain injury from a biking accident. Bob was born July 23, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He remembers at a young age riding his horse home after being with friends on December 7, 1941 and seeing his parents very upset because Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor.

He graduated from Granite High School in the class of 1946. He then took a job at a service station until his mission call for the LDS Church to the Netherlands mission for 31 months. On his mission he served as branch president in Assen, Apeldoorn and the Hague. He returned home January 1951. Five weeks later was drafted into the army and stationed in Camp Roberts, California. He worked his way up through the ranks to Sergeant Major of XI Corps Artillery. Prior to leaving for the Army, he fell in love with his lifelong sweetheart Verla Powell. It was a whirlwind courtship, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple October 12, 1951 on one of his furloughs. They honeymooned on a Greyhound bus returning to Camp Roberts. After his service Bob got a job at Burton Lumber and Hardware in Holladay where his worked his way up to manager.

Bob became a volunteer firefighter with his father at the Holladay station with the SL County Fire Department. He became a full-time fire fighter in 1960 and retired in 1990 as Deputy Chief. He gave the fire department his untiring loyalty. He loved helping people and felt joy when he could save them from disaster.

Bob and his sweet wife Verla had 6 children and loved to support all their activities. They would always know he was there when they heard his very loud, distinct high-pitched whistle. Then he loved to support his grandkids and great grandkids in all their activities. He also helped many of them by financially supporting them on their missions.

Bob and Verla served a couple’s mission in Belgium Antwerp from 1991 to 1993. Bob had to refresh his Dutch and Verla had to learn Dutch completely. They also served a Family History mission and served in the Baptistry at Jordan River Temple for 12 years. During these missions and service in the temple Bob was ward clerk in the Cottonwood 12th ward for over 20 years. He was sad to be released from this calling because he loved to serve the members and the bishops. The Cottonwood 12th ward was near and dear to his heart. He lived in his first home in that Holladay neighborhood for over 65 years.

While living there he has enjoyed many wonderful life experiences and Church callings.

For the past 3 years Bob has lived with his daughter Tina and son-in-law, Scott and has made many new friends in his new place.

Bob loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, college football, family activities and biking his 6 mile trail through his Sandy neighborhood. He loved people, and while riding, he would stop and visit many friends or wave to them. He had a profound effect on many and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Bob is Survived by his brothers R. William. Timmerman (Beverly deceased) Gerald L. Timmerman (Lorraine), sister Mary E. Flowers (Richard (Dick) deceased) 3 of his children Tom Timmerman (Leslie), Tina Schreyer (Scott), & Casey Timmerman (Ginger). Also 9 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren with one on the way.
