Our sweet Bob Zito died peacefully December 19. He was the epitome of grace, ever smiling, never complaining. While he is deeply missed, the beauty of his spirit is forever present.
Born to Robert J. and Romaine (Wahlin) Zito, he grew up in Magna, Utah, graduated from Cyprus High School, served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes, served in the Air Force National Guard, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah.
Bob and his wife Rae Nannette (Nikki) were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple and quietly celebrated their 66th anniversary on December 18. Their last evening together was filled with the magic of Christmas and their love for each other, Bob and Nikki were a dynamic duo. They celebrated everything family and loved opening their home. Everyone was welcome and greeted with his signature smile. Bob’s famous spaghetti sauce and pizzelles (an Italian cookie he made one at a time), were fan favorites at the legendary annual Christmas Eve party. He and Nikki hosted this event for 50-plus years.
Bob took the family on dozens of road trips. Most memorable were our annual beach house summer vacations to our favorite spot in San Juan Capistrano, which always included a day at Disneyland and a side trip to Tijuana for lunch and shopping—sometimes a little too much shopping! Nobody packed a car like Bob Zito; it was a super power!
Bob held leadership roles in Salt Lake County government for more than 30 years. He was a supportive member of his community and dedicated volunteer for many events and organizations. He was particularly enthusiastic and championed both amateur and professional hockey. He served as director of Salt Lake Amateur Hockey Association, and as official timekeeper for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, the Utah Grizzlies and the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. He was a devoted volunteer for more than 50 years.
In addition to family and hockey, Bob loved to play golf, winning countless tournaments and trophies, including two holes in one. He played golf into his 80s. He was a fan of the Grizzlies, Runnin’ Utes, and the Utah Opera. And, he always looked forward to Wednesday nights at the movies with friends.
Bob is survived by his wife, Nikki; daughters Penni Rae Zito (Marc Thompson), Angela Lokken (Eric); son, Robert G. “Bert” Zito (Jennifer); sister, Leslie “Cookie” Thomas (Mike); grandsons, William A. Lokken, Joshua J. Lokken, Zachary “Bug” Lokken (Anna), Robert A. Zito, Stanford W. Zito (Sara), Taylor Thompson (Kenzie); granddaughter, Jordyn Rae Hamilton (Shelton) and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert J. and Romaine Zito.
Memorial services will be held at Memorial Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive on Monday, December 29 at 11 a.m. preceded by viewings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and Sunday, December 28, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff of South Valley Dialysis, Rides for Wellness, and aide Patsy Harris for their exceptional service and care of Bob. They made him feel like a V.I.P.
