Roland Elmo Hill

March 16, 1936 — September 22, 2025

West Valley City

Roland Elmo Hill, beloved husband, father, grandfather and veteran, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 16, 1936 in Payson, Utah, to Roland and Lucille Hill, Elmo was the middle child of eleven siblings. He grew up with a strong sense of family and community, attending Springville High School before enlisting in the United States Army at just 17.

During his military service, Elmo was stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts, where he found joy in shooting the 50 mm cannon and proudly served as a member of the honor guard, marching in a special event in New York city. Though he loved serving his country, he often joked about his dislike for being told what to do. He returned home as a corporal, carrying with him a deep sense of pride and discipline.

Shortly after returning, Elmo met the love of his life, Norma Jean Ferre.. they were married on May 11, 1962, and later sealed in the LDS temple on January 31, 1964. together  they built a life centered around faith, family and adventure.

Elmo was a passionate BYU fan, holding season tickets to both football and basketball games and rarely missing a chance to cheer on his team. He coached his sons in Little League baseball, where his competitive spirit and leadership shone brightly. A true family man, Elmo made sure weekends were filled with adventure-floating rivers, hunting for rocks in the desert and traveling in the family RV he always kept ready for the next journey.

A skilled craftsman, Elmo's hands were rarely idle. He was talented in woodworking, folding chair macrame and countless other creative pursuits. His home stands as a testament to his artistry, filled with pieces he lovingly built over the years.

Professionally, Elmo served with the U.S. general services administration. First as an armed police officer, later as a manager overseeing general maintenance of the federal building and main post office in downtown salt Lake City. He retired with pride, having dedicated years of service to keeping these institutions running smoothly.

Elmo was preceded in death by his son, Bruce, who passed away just two months before. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Elmo leaves a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by his wife Norma Jean, Children Steve (Cathy) Hill, Kathy (Mark) Hislop, Debbie (John) Tanner along with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
