Ronald Frank Hales

Ronald Frank Hales, 73, passed away at his home in Riverdale, Utah, on September 18, 2026, after a quick and hard-fought battle with ALS. He was born May 19, 1953, in Ogden, Utah, to George Frederick and Daisy Earline Morris Hales.

Ron grew up in South Ogden in a house full of Hales kids, where he learned the value of hard work early. He had a paper route as a boy and paid his own way for everything. He attended Club Heights Elementary, South Ogden Junior High and graduated from Bonneville High School in 1971, where he wrestled and played the trumpet in the band. He went on to Weber State College, where he also wrestled.

While working as a young manager at Thrifty Drug in South Ogden, Ron met Sharon Murray, who worked next door at the Albertson's snack bar. They were married April 4, 1974, in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they raised three children.

Ron was a talented builder who worked as a house framer and finish carpenter and managed two construction crews. He also served his community as a Roy City firefighter and EMT.

When Iomega opened in Roy, Ron joined as a manufacturing engineer, helped develop several of its products, and was named an inventor on 17 United States Patents. He later used his engineering skills at Albion International, Aerospace Engineering and Support, and Storm Products, where he served as a vice president.

Ron was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served on the high council of the Riverdale Utah Stake and as president of the Lincoln Branch.

Ron loved his wife, children, and grandchildren and called them his best friends. He was a devoted supporter of his children and grandchildren's many activities and sporting events, and he loved having them with him at the family's mountain property. Fishing, watering and mowing the lawn, working, or sitting around the campfire at Murray's Meadow made him happiest. He and Sharon visited all 50 states and more than 120 temples worldwide. A lifelong baseball fan, he loved going to games with his brothers in his later years.

Ron faced ALS the way he faced everything else: with strength and without complaint. He stayed positive to the end, was at peace with what was coming, and reminded his family that “it could be worse.” He will be remembered for his strength and endurance, his happiness and laughter, and serving everyone around him.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sharon Hales; his three children; 11 grandchildren; and his four brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Freeman and Donna Murray; two brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the Riverdale Stake Center, 4000 South Parker Drive, Riverdale, Utah. Friends and family may visit with the family Tuesday, September 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the stake center. Interment will be at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Boulevard, South Ogden, Utah.
