Ronald Nile Spratling, Jr.
September 30, 1932 - April 9, 2026
Ronald Nile Spratling, Jr., born September 30, 1932, to Erma Leona Wolf Spratling and Ronald Nile Spratling, Sr., entered the world cherished and deeply wanted. From his earliest days, he was surrounded by love and a strong sense of family that would guide him throughout his life. He passed away peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of April 9, 2026.
Working for his father at Holladay Lumber, Ron learned the value of hard work. He was a proud Granite High Farmer and never missed an opportunity to sing the school song on car trips. Following high school, he served a two-and-a-half-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Uruguay Mission, traveling by boat from New York. His blond hair, blue eyes, warm personality, and command of the Spanish language opened many doors as he shared the gospel.
Ron pursued his education at the University of Utah with dedication and purpose, earning both his bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees in fewer than five years, graduating in 1959. This achievement marked the beginning of a distinguished professional career defined by integrity, intellect, and a deep respect for the law.
He served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Utah and as counsel to the Department of Business Regulation, focusing on the financial sector.
In 1974, Ron, alongside his father and a group of Holladay businessmen, founded Holladay Bank & Trust with a clear and compassionate vision: to help people secure loans and create opportunities for themselves and their families. His work reflected a deep commitment to his community and a belief that access to financial resources could change lives. Through this effort, he helped build an institution rooted in trust, service, and local support. After co-founding the Bank, he worked in various capacities throughout his life, including President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the time of the sale in June of 2025, he remained actively involved as CEO and Co-Chair of the Board.
Ron met Myrna Loretta Clark, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1957. Together they started a family and both were loving and devoted parents to their seven children. His love for his family was steadfast and enduring, and he took great pride in each of them, always asking, “What’s new?”
He is survived by his children: Karin (Robert Hunter), Linda (Bill Stoven), Katie, Shelly, Ronald III (Tami), Suzanne (Branden Sidwell), and Tori (Rob Andersen); 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, with more on the way. He was preceded in death by Myrna Spratling, a son-in-law, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
He married Susan Jan (Jahne) Healey in 1990. Together they traveled the world, creating cherished memories, especially at their home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, her children: Renee (Tom Pinkney) and Jeff Healey; and two grandchildren.
Ron was also a loyal and generous friend, always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Those who knew him valued his steady presence, the warmth he brought into their lives, and his remarkable ability to think creatively and solve problems. There was no challenge he could not meet with ingenuity and determination.
He will be remembered for his steady character, his contributions to the community, and the kindness, wit, and purpose that defined his life. His legacy endures in the many lives he touched and in the family who will forever hold him in their hearts.
