On Friday night, March 5, 2021 after a 19-year absence, we believe our dad returned from heaven one more time to pick up his dear, sweet Roxie for a long-awaited heavenly Friday night date. With Mom’s passing, two regal generations; one on the Quist side and the other on the Hamilton side, came to a quiet, beautiful close.
Roxie Iris Quist Hamilton, age 91, was born in Claresholm, Alberta Canada on April 13, 1929, to Margaret Elenora Sophia Erickson Quist, a Swedish immigrant to Canada and David Emanuel Quist, a U.S. immigrant to Canada.
Mom was the youngest of six children. She had four older sisters (Mary, Evelyn, Delsie and Dora) who certainly doted on their cute, shy little sister. Her brother Nephi surely started his RCMP training early, as her protector during their elementary school years.
In her early teens, Mom moved to Calgary to help her sister Evelyn, whose husband was away during WWII. She became a second mom to Evelyn’s kids, and often spoke of them with fondness.
After our dad, Maxwell Ian Hamilton returned from serving in the RCAF in England during the second world war, he met our mom in Calgary, which started a sweet, lifelong love affair that lasted over 52 years, until Dad’s passing in 2001. Their marriage in the Cardston Alberta Temple on March 23, 1949 set in motion what we believe is an eternal union of loving companionship and marriage. We are so happy for them that they are united again.
Shortly after their marriage, on a whim, they hitchhiked from their home in Raymond to Banff. They wrote about that 350-mile round-trip adventure in The Raymond Recorder, the weekly newspaper they owned and operated in Southern Alberta. Working alongside Dad in the printshop, Mom was setting type on the linotype machine up until the night before our brother Peter (1952 – 2010) was born. After Peter, came Wendy, Delsie and Shauna, all meticulously spaced two years apart.
After selling their weekly newspaper, with their four little kids in tow, they migrated to the United States, finally settling appropriately on Smiley Drive in Taylorsville, Utah, in 1961. The following year, they completed their family with the birth of Ross (me!). Mom loved each of us through thick and thin. She continued to show that same type of love to our spouses, and her beloved posterity.
After Ross started 1st Grade, or rather, Grade 1 as our Canadian cousins say, Mom re-entered the paid work force, first working at the Tie Tac in the Fashion Place Mall. Then she spent 20 years at Sorensen Research/Abbott Laboratories in a variety of capacities. Her favorite position was working on the phones as a customer service representative, where she thoroughly enjoyed the relationships she developed.
After Mom retired from Abbott, she and Dad served in the Old Time Print Shop in the Nauvoo Visitor’s Center Mission. They loved that time together.
Mom loved serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She especially enjoyed visiting with those wonderful sisters from the ward who were not often seen at church on Sundays. They in turn loved her and appreciated her warmth and kindness. She was also often the first one to welcome a new member into the ward as they walked into the chapel.
She was quick to smile and quick to chuckle, especially at herself. We will miss that.
Mom left this mortal life with a firm testimony of, and love for her Savior Jesus Christ. She also had a clear understanding of, and appreciation for the plan of salvation.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, her son Peter, son-in-law Corlas and her beloved husband Max. She is survived by her children Wendy (Lou) Mickler, Delsie Anne Montague, Shauna (Fritz) Lindbeck, Ross (Kimberly) Hamilton, 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many adoring nieces and nephews. With that, Mom would surely say, “Isn’t that remarkable?” Indeed it is Mom, indeed it is!
